So looking at my DVR scheduled recordings, seems like I have completely fallen into the Reality show syndrome! No doubt it is music to the ears of TV producers which make a ton of money with the low cost of product here. OK, there are some exceptions:

1. 60 Minutes. Have been watching for decades. While the re-runs get old, the quality never does. And the Genius of putting Andy Rooney at the end makes you want to watch the whole thing. Great treat every sunday.

2. Dancing with Stars. My wife used to be a ballroom dancer so she has an affinity for the show. I enjoy watching it with her, seeing how long we have to put up with the terrible dancers who are kept there because the general public keeps voting for them despite making a fool of themselves.

3. So you think you can dance. OK, I am a sucker for modern dance. Shoot me :D. I actually use the show to discover new music. Sad that they don't always list the artist behind the music. I think the last 4 out of 6 CDs I bought were triggered by the show! I love the unusual choreography from time to time and talent some of the dancers bring to the table. It hurts me just to look at some of their moves!

4. Chopped. This is a food network show where multiple chefs try to compete cooking different courses with oddball ingredients in them. Imagine pickles and desert! Exciting to see who gets thrown out and who doesn't. And how they can make sense out of random ingredients.

5. Throwdown with Bobby Flay. It is great to see whether Bobby can match the skill of the chefs around the US with their specialty in certain foods. Battle of generalist against the specialist! And good way to learn the secrets of people making some of the best foods in America.

6. Dinner: Impossible. Yet another cooking show. British cook having to cook for hundreds under weird and challenging situations/ingredients in 8 hours. He does remarkably well.

7. Man v Food. OK, shoot me. I like cooking shows :D. Funny guy meets food challenges. Remarkable how much food the man can eat and how much spiciness he can handle. Also a good way to know half decent places to eat in America. I say half-decent because the place he went to in Seattle area where I live, is a touristy spot with not so good reputation for food.

8. Deadliest Catch. The series is a getting a bit long in the tooth and I am losing some interest but still, it is nice to see what these people go through to catch crab and feed us this food at our table.

9. Lots of other PBS shows I won't detail.

10. I better stop here and not make you feel like I watch TV all day :D.

So what are some of your favorite TV shows and why?

There is a great line in the Japanese TV show that says, "Tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are!" So is the case with what you watch :).

So how about the rest of the folks here? Love to see your list to free me from never ending list of reality shows :D.

Modern Family, Sons of Anarchy, and Criminal Minds for me.

Oops. I'm also addicted to River Monsters.

Yeah Boardwalk Empire is very cool, I love Steve Buscemi look and sigh when his character feels he is dealing with idiots :)

Also one of the very best US/UK shows ever done IMO is The Tudors.
This is one series our family can watch many hours at a time, brilliant acting and captures the period very well.

And who cannot love Spartacus or the better prequel; By Jupiter's **** - The language is pretty outragous but amusing as it is used within a framework, same way as Deadwood and I think both are heavily distributed by HBO it seems over here.
HBO seems to be a good driving force for many great series.

Aside from these I would include:
1. House
2. Dancing with the Stars (which sadly is no longer shown this season over here in UK)
3. Fringe
4. V
5. Game of Thrones
6. Finished but Legend of the Seeker.
7. Cold Case
8. NCIS Season 8 (not the cruddy Los Angeles)
9. Ice Road Truckers
10. Walking Dead
Cheers
Orb

Survivor
DWTS
Amazing Race
American Idol
CSI
Criminal Minds
2.5 Men
Big Bang Theory
Top Gear

I used to watch a lot of television when I was married, as the ex loved her shows, but lately not so much. When I do watch I like:

Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives
Dirty Jobs
The Passionate Eye (CBC)
Good Eats (too bad Alton Brown has called it quits with this show)
The Fifth Estate (CBC)
Daily Planet

The only network show I watch is Parenthood. On disc or on Netflix I've enjoyed The Tudors, Pillars of the Earth, Lost, and a few more.

Tim

My current favorites are definitely Dexter and The Big Bang Theory. During the period July 2010 - January 2011 I suffered of an addiction to Lost (I watched all the 6 seasons in a row on Netflix, never watched an episode before...).
All times favorites are The Knight Rider, The A-Team and Diff'rent Strokes (you know, I'm a son of the '80s...)

I like Chopped. I have no idea how the contestants are able to do what they do in such little time. I don't like the sob stories, though.

I am with you. They should have a rule against the latter bit.

I now have another favorite reality show. It is called American Pickers. It is these two lovable dudes who travel the country looking for antiques they can buy and resell. There are times when I think I my ears much be deceiving me when I hear them pay thousands of dollars for a rusted engine! It is a very well done show and they meet all kinds of odd birds. I never liked antiques until I saw this show!

Here is more on it including past episodes: http://www.history.com/shows/american-pickers

Mike, here's a link:

Benedict Cumberbach plays Holmes perfectly. He was recently seen in "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and was terrific as William Pitt the Younger in "Amazing Grace"
Martin Freeman is Watson. He's been in the UK "The Office" and "Love, Actually"

Much better than the recent US movies.

Thanks, jazdoc! I really like the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes films from the 1940s and the more recent Bret series from the 80s.

I really don't watch that much TV as I would prefer to listen to music but there is one that my wife and I have been enjoying together. The Mentalist.

This lady is simply gorgeous...

...and I love Cho's character. Focused, to the point and a man with few words.
