The Lyra has incredible bass - the resolution, the overall authority - they are truly awesome. I never thought I would match the bass of my Boulder 3060 on the Alexx Vs but the Lyra is better! That said, I am always looking to incrementally improve things! As such, I consulted with Elliot about the Goebel Sovereigns. Elliot was very candid with me. He agreed that my speakers do bass very well but he also agreed that the addition of subs might add what I was looking for - that little extra presence that comes from a pressurized room (my room is ~22 x 40 x 12 high). To be fair, I am also of the mind that subs are never a bad thing - only badly implemented! I have seen some WBF stalwarts who seem to think subs are some symbol of system weakness. (On another thread there is debate about 30W amps driving great bass on 91db speakers!)
The Sovereigns arrived exactly as Elliot had told me they would. The packaging is complete overkill - they come in double boxes around flight cases around foam etc. The fit and finish of the Sovereigns is second to none. I have had a few sets of top-line speakers. Most are top-shelf automotive paint finishes. The Sovereigns are exactly like a Bosendorfer piano. They are another level altogether! Setting them up is shockingly simple. They come with a small usb plug that provides a wireless interface to your phone for customizing the curves to your liking from your listening position. Very very cool stuff! As for the sound, they absolutely transformed the overall presence of music in the room. It was a jaw dropping step change - no joke. They have tremendous definition and control - I worried that the Lyra defintion might be undermined by a 'thud-thud-thud' subwoofer. Ron Resnick visited and he was even impressed! I cannot recommend the Sovereign highly enough.
Also, I found Elliot to be really great to work with on this. He was very candid and pragmatic. No dark audio arts and sciences nonsense - just straight talk and advice.
