Brian Wilson

RIP

sad news indeed. A gifted artist with a troubled mind

Hard to believe we lost two icons of recorded music in the same week (Sly Stone two days prior). Pet Sounds will always remain one of my top 3 favorite albums.

Incredible musical genius.

Here is Elton John on Pet Sounds:

Obviously, Pet Sounds also inspired the Beatles to make Sgt. Pepper's.

Good Vibrations is one my top 10 songs of all time.

Incredibly sad news. Such a deeply talented singer / songwriter and we were lucky to have him with us for such a long time.
I heard the news while playing Chess. I met him at the local airport before the Pandemic and while in a wheelchair, he was cordial.

I listened to Pet Sounds in its entirety last night in memoriam and was moved to tears. It wasn't just that John Lennon said it was the best album ever made (and motivated the The Beatles to up their game with Sgt. Pepper). Nor was it hearing "God only knows" which McCartney called the greatest song ever written. Rather it was the sheer genius of Wilson's creativity. The sounds and arrangements Wilson got from the "Wrecking Crew" studio musicians were just other worldly. The mix was beyond extraordinary and as has been noted elsewhere by many, changed pop music studio production forever. What a gift he was. How fortunate were we! (And the Beach Boys are still touring!)

Here is a gem from the days before Pet Sounds. It's In My Room, written and produced in 1963:

I don't think there is a way someone would not be moved by the music and its beautiful harmonies.

Bruce Springsteen called it his "theme song" and said he had listened to it countless times in his youth.
