Roy Gregory's RMAF "System Setup" presentation IMO is worth watching for those not familiar with the audio system foundation approach. Although I attended a similar presentation at the 2008 RMAF and my audio system greatly benefited from the recommendations, I was reminded by this video attention to detail is critical. I had incorrectly placed resonance control devices under the shelf supporting my amp rather than between the amp and the shelf. A simple change made a positive improvement in articulation and dynamics.
OK, I'm ~14 minutes into this and I'm finding Mr.Gregory's approach outright insulting to my intelligence. He plays, maybe, 15 seconds of a track and then tells the audience what they're hearing. Unfamiliar room, unfamiliar system, unfamiliar music and not enough of it, and a defined representation is supposed to be drawn. I'm not sure how that works, not to mention the scope of his claims. I realize that I sound like the neighborhood Grinch, and I'll finish watching the vid before making another post.
I too watched it all. It was entertaining to say the least . I was surprised to see the level of conviction in his face and how without any positive feedback from the audience, he proceeded to go through tweak after tweak. In Youtube of course it is hard to make any audio evaluation. I could however evaluate his statements on the acoustic products at the end. Unfortunately while half of what he said was right there, the other half was not. So on that front, he seems to be too confident of things that are not correct.
One early point he made was interesting about how speakers should be aligned to 3-4 mllimeters or 1/8 of an inch. Did he watch the audience moving far more than that in their seats? How about the fact that he set up that room before anyone came in? And how people were sitting all over the place.
Tell people what they're going to hear and you'll be shocked at how many of them hear it. The more impressive-looking the equipment, the more likely they'll be to hear it.
OK, so RG comes off as not inclusive and perhaps exaggerated the importance of speaker alignment But given time constraints, a lot of material to be covered, and equipment swapping, I'm not sure he had much of an alternative. Having attended a couple of RG's seminars I found him very knowledgable and accomodating answering questions afterwards. I'll simply state that in my own experience the "tweaks" he demonstrated do make a significantly positive difference. Those of you who haven't done so already and are interested in optimizing your existing equipment may want to consider this approach consistent with your own audio systems.
