Are custom parts used in electronics a trap?

I've noticed most high-end electronics boast about using custom parts (e.g. caps, resistors, transformers) "made exclusively for us!" These products should be expected to last for decades, especially given their cost. But what happens if the manufacturer doesn't last for decades? Will these products be repairable? I honestly don't know the answer, but given how prevalent the use of custom parts is and how expensive audio has become, it's a concern.

IMO, if we do not suffer from audiophilia nervosis, the only critical components from such perspective are the digital microprocessors and displays. And sometimes transformers, if the equipment is not properly designed or incorrectly operated.

Do you mean that the custom capacitors, etc. that manufacturers brag about aren't difficult to replace with commonly available substitutes without appreciably changing the sound? (Obviously I would expect anyone who does that work to have looked into the brands of components that would be used.) What if the "custom" part has a non-standard value?

;) C’mon. You knew somebody was going to do it. :D
