Anyone Using The New IE9

Any thought on the new browser. I upgraded yestrerday and still favor Google Chrome as my browser. I did think that many features of IE9 are similar if not identical to Chrome

Is IE9 faster?

When I accidentally upgraded my old notebook from IE7 to IE8 (let it auto-update once without checking what it was doing) it slowed to a crawl on some websites (practically unusable) and slowed down most others. After a lot of research and trying various fixes, I gave up. A friend tried to go back and had horrible troubles, so I let it go, and one of the main sites I frequent is now only accessible from my desktop. Grrr... I will probably try IE9 in hopes it's better; hard to believe it could be worse.

Unfortunately, I had to use IE for work, and have not loaded another browser on my notebook. Might try Firefox, as a lot of friends seem to like it.

Have you tried Chrome

No; sounds like I should. Until fairly recently, I had to use IE only on my work notebook, and have always been too lazy to try (and learn) another browser on my desktop (used for personal and work). Maybe we should start a "what's the best browser" thread!

Chrome is the fastest browser I have ever used and intuitive to boot

As someone who has used every version of IE since it's inception, I will say IE9 is the best one yet. It's a bit confusing at first without a dedicated SEARCH bar, but now I love the idea of just typing my question into the URL space. I also think that BING is getting better at returning the most relevant sites for any question. Much like WIN7, I think MS has a winner on their hands with IE9.

Not sure if I'd quite assess it that way, but you have a point nonetheless. On the merits of MS' release of IE9, I'd say they learned (;)) and it is a step forward.

John I felt the same as you. I used faithfully IE from its inception and had no real issues until my son suggested that Itry Chrome. I did and haven't looked back

You can always right click and select Open in New Tab.

Another cool power tip for Chrome is to right click on one of your tabs and select "Pin tab." This makes the tab smaller so it takes less room. Good use of it to have WBF always resident there :).

Power tip #2: Hold the shift key down and hit Escape. Chrome will pop up a task manager similar to Windows, showing you how much memory and CPU each tab is using. Good for identifying why your machine is running slow.

Downloaded and ran Chrome. Still working on changing settings to work the way I want them to... Is there a way to make favorites selected (from the ones I imported) open in a new tab?

If you click on the little star at the extreme right of the URL bar you can put the link on the bookmark bar under the URL

Guys, if Amir uses Chrome rather than IE then you have to admit it has to be good for him to pass on a MS product

I picked up on that as well Steve! Maybe it's time I have a look at Chrome.

I have no vested interest obviously in which browser people use but since I switched to Chrome 6 months ago it is the only one that I use. For me it is lightening fast and so simple to use. I see similarities with the new IE9 and that is why I commented that MS is again late to the party.

I'm running it on the one Windoze 7 machine I have. Seems to be ok. Also reviewed well in Maximum PC. I think M$ may have missed out on part of the market by not allowing it on XP. Still using Firefox mostly but will have to give Chrome a try.

I just downloaded IE9 and here are some early remarks.

It is hugely faster than IE8. On my laptop IE8 was taking 4 seconds to open a new tab -- so frustrating. Chrome is less than a second. IE9 is there with it now.

On the down side, there is some funkiness in the output rendering. Hit the down button and hold it and it is a smearing mess on an LCD. And not smooth to boot. The problem seems to be partially due to the fact that hitting the down button scrolls a whole bunch of pixels which is quite non-intuitive. Chrome on the other hand, moves as much as you intuitively feel it should.

I think I read that IE9 is built on top of the new rendering engine (WPF). If so, I have had the same problem with another app that uses, Microsoft Expression Suite. Surprising that someone thought they should break metaphors that everyone is used to here.

If you are like me who needs IE from time to time for special jobs where Chrome doesn't work (configuring and using VPN over our router is one), then might as well have the much faster IE9. But if you use most of your time on sites that are like ours with required scrolling, then I find it not as usable for now. Either way, the gap has been sharply reduced with Chrome.

More to come as I use it.

One more thing: Microsoft has not learned from Google on simplicity of install. I was forced to reboot with nasty messages of "updating windows" on both shutdown and boot up. You will be shocked how much better Chrome install is. No reboot. No nothing. It just installs and that is it. It is the model of how software install should work.

Chrome installs very very fast. It is my browser of choice and as Amir says, it is very fast searching. Simple to use.

Amir wouldn't you say however that IE9 is a big plagiarism of Chrome
