Last weekend I went to Mad Max with my son. An incredible waste of cinematography, CGI and art direction. No plot. No character development. No redeeming value whatsoever. A perfect example of vacuous blockbuster. Tonight, I took in Love and Mercy. What an incredibly lovely, touching, artfully crafted movie. Highly recommended, even if you're not a Beach Boys fan.

My son is in the movie industry and is a skilled editor. He works with many Directors of Photography all of whom have said the film is an editing masterpiece. I almost saw it but something came up. I am anxious to see it. Yours is the first bad review of it that came up

Going to see it, @ IMAX, in 3D. ...Most likely this week. ...I'll share my impression. :b ...'Mad Max: Road Fury'.

* A friend of mine, writer and filmmaker, said that it was the "best" movie he saw in a very long time.

That seems to describe most films these days. Very few original ideas left or so it seems.

I agree with your son, Steve. It is an editing masterpiece. The cinematography is stellar. The art direction is incredible. And they spent all of that on one long, boring car chase. Not a character you learn enough about to care about. No plot, really. No human conflict outside of the fight scenes. No loss, no redemption, no there there.

Love and Mercy was excellent.

Speaking of bad movies, my wife and I went to see San Andreas a few days ago. It was one of those movies that was so bad it was good.

We actually had a good time laughing at some of the absurdities in the movie. Special effects were over the top.

We'll have to check out the Beach Boys movie.

Regarding Mad Max, I made a negative comment previously about the film and then saw that its gotten rave reviews - 98% positive rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. Have to admit I've never seen one of the Mad Max movies except for previews. I thought it would be just as Phelonious Punk described it.

Of course, if I am willing to go to San Andreas, that ruins my movie critic credibility.

actually disagree - Charlize Theron's character was well developed and she was the star, not Tom Hardy. the scene in the "green" area was quite human and the feminist overtones throughout the entire movie were fresh. how many badass female action films do you see produced? not to mention there wasn't even a romance between both stars which would have been "typical" lame hollywood. if i had a qualm about char development, would have been with Max himself- but clearly they are waiting for the sequel on that as he had 10 lines.

for an action/summer movie, this one was pretty first rate and the world he created was really interesting. it wasn't all about explosions like every lame superhero movie- note the guy with the guitar, the dudes swinging on poles, etc. very unique.

if you were expecting an Oscar winning storyline, not sure what to tell you. my problem with the movie is i couldn't understand the dialogue in the first 20 minutes very well- i think my seat was too far below the center channels.

To each his own, I suppose. I wasn't expecting an Oscar-winning story line, but I was expecting a story line.
