Recently attended a vinyl event at a major “high end” dealer. (Not one of the ones I’ve complimented, like Paragon, where personnel are meticulous).

A record company teamed with an equipment manufacturer to show off how well some old restored tapes had transferred to vinyl.

The format involved setup and private practice run, followed by several public presentations over the course of the evening.

I was present for the private practice run, and I must say that the first cut played was really impressive. The others were good too, but just not quite as real sounding. There were 6 of us in the large room, and I was the only one not affiliated with any of the sponsors.

I took a seat in the first public demo and noticed immediately that the sound had degraded. That first cut was much less real sounding, and the other cuts were sibilant and generally mediocre.

My first reaction was that 35 people in the room vs 6 people in the room had so affected room acoustics that the playback was no longer pleasing.

But after the room cleared out, I went to the TT, got out my inspection light, and saw a 1/8” diameter dust/debris ball shrouding the stylus.

This dealership does not clean their records. The record had been sitting on the platter for much of the day. And it had probably never been cleaned. I pointed it out to one the TT manufacturer’s staff. He ran off to try to find a cleaning tool. I don’t know how he fared as it was time for me to leave.

What was at the root of the unexceptional sound? Probably both the packed room’s acoustics and the dust bunny on the needle. How often do these problems come up at shows? Probably more often than you would think.

I went to one show where the speaker was wired backwards... That was embarrassing!!
I've witnessed many setups that were less than stellar.....

When I was at university, a friend/classmate wanted to buy a Linn Sondek LP12 after saving up some money from summer jobs and we went to audition it together. The guy demonstrating the turntable at the dealership was probably a high school or university student himself. He took the turntable and placed it on top of the cardboard box it came in. The suspension was completely askew and the sound was just terrible. In fact, the stylus skipped repeatedly during loud signals. Nevertheless, my friend bought it. I met up with him last year, 35 years after graduation. I mentioned this encounter and we laughed about it. He is still using the record player.

I bought my first LP12 used. It was 1978 production and maybe four years old. It had an early (3/4” pillar) Itokk, and the Nirvana and Valhalla mods. The plinth was a “picture frame” style (unbraced) of fluted afromosia wood. I gave $500 for it.

Over 40 years I upgraded it to a braced Greeves of Sheffield plinth, Kore subclassIs, late model Itokk (1” arm pillar and Troika compatible headshell). Latest black cable, latest springs, grommets, screws. Latest top (with corner fixing), Cirkus kit, etc. I eventually had a complete set of LP12 tools, including setup jig.

It was a great TT, but I’d added a Klimax level even more tricked out LP12, a Clearaudio Master Reference, and a few other TTs. Not having infinite space, I traded it away.

I wish I had enough room to keep all of my old gear. Especially that LP12. Ah … the memories.

While still a graduation student my first contact with a "serious" audiophile was a at records shop - he was introduced to me as "someone who owns a Linn Sondek LP12" We become close friends, I helped him setting up a Mark Levinson complete HQD system, but at such time with the 634 times better Oracle Delphi ...

Later I also owned a BlackAsh LP12 and an aformosia LP12 Vallhala returned for nostalgic reasons around 2000. But my "permanent" iturntable along decades is an Oracle Premier, now with several upgrades, including surely their great acrylic mat.
