Here is a completely different Nova.
Italian fusion band, with the incredible Corrado Rustici on guitar, performing Vimana.
(actually, this performance is not Nova, but a recent performance of a Nova piece, with Steve Smith on drums)
Last night, my listening session went something like this:
Started with Italian prog band, PFM. Their debut release, "Storia di un Minuto" on vinyl. Music does not get too much more beautiful than this.
Italian prog is woefully underappreciated. Much of it is the equal of any British band of...
Seems like a question you should be asking yourself.
If you do not have neighbors, or others you would disturb, then speaker listening is my preference. If you have limitations because you may disturb others, then headphones may be a good option.
I almost always opt for listening with...
There are many reasons for this.
First of all, pop music is not recorded with audio enthusiasts in mind. It is recorded to sound good on car stereo, smart phones with cheap ear buds, sound bars, home pods, etc. Even before all these new ways to listen, pop recordings were still engineered and...
A jazz and classical prodigy at a very young age. Has not disappointed as he got older.
Amazing chops and creativity.
Only problem...
His CD's are hard to find and expensive.
I tend to disagree with this.
I have heard many speakers that have a flat frequency response, without being heavy on bass or rolled off treble, that still sound warm.
Speakers that tend to round off transcients, even slightly, will sound warm to my ears.
GamuT RS5i for example, measure...
While "warm sound" can refer to speakers that are rolled off in the upper frequencies, it can also refer to a speaker which have a very flat frequency response, but has mids and tweeters that tend to round off transcients and the attacks of instruments.
Coherence usually refers to speakers...
A horrible thought just entered my mind.
Since this recording just received such great reviews by Victor Serinus at Stereophile, this is going to be overplayed at every audio show for the next year.
Hopefully, it will lose favor by next year's T.H.E. Show in LA.
Not this old stereotype again.
First of all, this is a false dichotomy.
I know plenty of audiophiles (I'm one of them), with very high end systems , and all of us, are music first audiophiles.
Does that mean that, there are certain times, when we spend a few hours, just listening to the...
Overall, I tend to agree.
But I will say, his early original material was quite good. I still like his debut album and "Think Of One" quite a bit.
I also saw him, and his original band, on tour for the debut album at the Roxy, and it was a pretty impressive show. But after that early period, I...
Not impressed at all, to say the least.
It sounds like a pastiche of Copland and Gershwin.
I can't help thinking, that if anyone else, without the celebrity and notoriety of Marsalis, release this, it would quickly fade into obscurity.
But not only am I not impressed, this actually angers me...
I just got a copy of Michael Formanek's, "Ensemble Kolossus".
As the title suggests, this is a big band recording.
Really nice modern and progressive take on big band jazz. I've only listened to it a couple of times, but it seems like there is much to unwrap.
I've tried.
I have decent amount of Bach, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Mozart, and many other pre-20th century recordings in my collection. I play them from time to time, to see if they'll do anything for me. After all, if I begin to like pre-20th century music, that opens an entire new world of music...
Totally agree.
From my experience, my favorite artists, bands, composers, were not immediately appreciated by me, on the first few listenings. It took several or more times until they gelled for me.
I was not a fan of classical, at all, until I heard Bartok, Stravinsky, Britton, Ravel. I...
A label I haven't seen mentioned yet, is the German "Brain" label.
This label specialized in prog, electronic, Kraut rock, jazz rock and related genres. Records on this label were universally dead quiet, dynamic, clear and detailed.
Some artists on this label are:
Neu! - offshoot of Kraftwerk...
I am glad to see you prefaced your comments with the phrase, "I hold the Opinion". It seems that on most audio and music forums, people tend to state opinion as if it is objective fact.
I will only comment on the bolded (my bold) section above. While I can understand people's different taste...
Count me as another major Bartok fan!
I don't listen to him quite as much as I used to, since my tastes have moved more toward atonal composers (Carter, Schwantner, Berg, Lindberg, Wuorinen, etc), but he still holds tremendous esteem in my mind.
At one time, Stravinsky was my favorite...
I attended Saturday and Sunday.
It was quite good, actually. Not quite up to the level of the previous Newport based shows, but it would seem they are on their way to recovering from last year's debacle (not their fault).
There was a surreptitious announcement made before one of the Sunday...
I'll be there Sunday for sure, and Saturday is an extreme likelihood. If I can't make it on Saturday to the show, then I will be going on Friday.
I'd love to meet other WBF members!
Here's one that has gotten a lot of praise that came out at the end of 2018.
"All Traps on Earth" from Sweden. Maybe it doesn't live up to all the hype it receives, but it sure is good nonetheless.
This is no holds barred prog, No crossover, semi commercial, song oriented stuff here. Long...
So far, from what I see on the official website, only 11 rooms booked.
Not too promising as far as the size goes.
Hopefully I am mistaking, since local LA shows used to be around 100 rooms.
I watched Fremer's vid, and enjoyed it. But yeah, it's the same old 'warhorses' that the vast majority of audiophiles are already aware of, with a few exceptions.
As far as the industry being stagnant and focused on aging boomers, I believe this perception is somewhat biased by living in the...
Here's one that seemed to fly under everybody's radar when it came out, and still seems to be unknown, even for ECM.
South African guitarist, Steve Eliovson's, "Dawn Dance", with Collin Walcott on percussion. He made this one great album, then pretty much disappeared. I guess the story goes, he...
Count me as another huge fan of ECM!
I love their whole esthetic.
With most ECM artists, the musicians not soloing are usually playing something more interesting than just chords to back up the soloist. There is a lot more interplay between musicians, than the usual...
Is there a price listed anywhere on this thread? I did not read the entire thing, but I can't seem to find it.
I looked at the link given (http://degritter.com/media-kit/) for the product, but it doesn't seem to be listed there either.
Thanks!
I want to extol the amazing sound quality of recordings from the Nonesuch series called "Spectrum New American Music". These recordings from the late 60's and 70's, of contemporary classical music, are really quite a revelation. And considering they were originally released as budget recordings...
