Sub for system

Hello,
I am using a Marantz 8B Amp, 7 Pre, 10B Tuner, Bluesound NODE, Focal 816 speakers and think I need a sub for some added low punch and can use some suggestions.
Would like to keep it in the $500-600 range. Not looking for thunderous bass just round out the sound. Keeping in mind the 8B is a fairly low power tube amp.

I think the KEF series of subs includes this price point and some of their more recent subs have been well received. Personally, I have owned Velodynes for nearly 30 years consecutively...also very good.

Personally I don't want to use subs in a 2 channel hifi system.

If you think your speakers are lacking in bass and also that it's not a deficiency with the amp, then ask yourself if you have the right speakers. If you get better speakers that will provide the extra bass fullness that you are looking for, you'll find that everything else will sound better with your new better (and more costly) speakers. Setting up with extra speakers (main ones plus 1 or 2 subs) is hugely more difficult than just 2 speakers and the temptation is to leave this important job to DSP room correction - not good overall as the entire frequency range has to suffer this processing stage, despite only the bass needing to be adjusted. Result is compromised top end - some of the magic sparkle / lifelike sound is lost by this unnecessary processing.

Also look at it from a logical cost point of view – better speakers vs keeping existing speakers and spending good money on extra cabinets, extra amps (most subs have them built in) and extra speaker cables. All for a bit more bass that you could get without this hassle by buying the right speakers that suit your room.

Its interesting...I have used a sub consecutively since 1995, all the way through our current XLFs. I have even heard the mighty Rockport Arrakis...and thought I would still use subs with them. And sure enough Arnie of Arrakis fame with his remarkable all-out system...eventually added subs too. But he uses a 6-pack of REL 25th Anniversaries to make a meaningful difference...but according to Arnie, what a difference! And so it goes...ever upwards. Yes, more complicated but boy when its right...

...and in our room, with the sub, we are flat to 25hz in-room and -5db at 20hz and we would not have it any other way. The main speakers run full range, but the Sub adds independently below 38hz or so...and it is a great addition in terms of spacial cues, sense of space and the sense of the venue all around you. It does help in terms of synthesizer tracks on things like Hans Zimmer soundtracks, etc...but it actually works really well on live jazz recordings where the sense of venue is really great with the sub on.

Without subs I now have 4 x 12" drivers to provide all the bass I want and probably more than my neighbours want me to have! My previous speaker systems have mostly been with twin 10" per speaker. I've never wanted speakers that attempt to provide good bass from an array of 6 or 7" drivers as this always sounds stressed, as opposed to the relaxed and lifelike sound from big drivers working well within their designed frequency range.

Same. ive used subs in every system i have owned, with speakers that play down to 20-100hz its a lot to get them integrated perfectly currently I use audiolense dsp with 4 high efficiency 18” drivers tuned to 19hz. Properly integrated subwoofers are a game changer and once you hear it theres no going back.

im a fan of high efficiency pro audio style subwoofers. the more the merrier. And some form of dsp is a must.

but for an all one solution on a budget I recommend HSU Research and a minidsp with dirac

Very cool...thanks for that. Ron and I have been speaking about exactly that: high efficiency multiple 18" cones dedicated to subterranean bass signal only. I am looking at dual-opposing 18" in a single chassis, possibly 2 of them...Ron, I imagine, probably more.

Gobel makes an 18 inch sub for subsonics. Its incredibly fast and light cone, works for adjustments from you listening chair over a network it sets up and is incredibly easy to dial in. They sound amazing. Check them out Divin Sovereign!

Thank you. Although I am no techie, do you happen to have any 2m open-field measurements? Its always fun to read measurements...in this case, distortion and air displacement/loudness/decibels. (I think these 2 are fair key targets given that we are talking 38hz and below as opposed to mids where LOTS of things besides pure raw displacement and distortion are at work).

Would be great to learn more...Goebel have created some amazing flagships!
