Wow

Makes me want to hop on a plane to Detroit.

"Want" is very different from "Can" my friends ;) ;) ;)

Besides, a 5000 piece collection of NM LPs would be the only reason I'd ever want to see Detroit again. No offense to our native Detroit citizens!

Somehow I doubt this guy is going to get the $125K he is asking.

Not necessarily to an individual do I but a dealer like Chad or John Turton, etc. might pick it up and then sell off the individual pieces. If they're in the shape indicated and the labels/recordings seen in the pic, the collection could be worth more than the list price. But I'd want to see it before plunking down the money.

Very true. Damn for an 8th of a million, the guy should offer to pack and ship!

Even at $25-30 per album, you're still just breaking even!

Surely a much better and enjoyable investment than a 150k preamplifier!

Looking in the detail of the past sales of the seller I would expect his asking price to be met. But I doubt that anyone would risk his money without flying there, and asking to pick 50 LPs randomly and listening to them first!

Price is far too high, even audiophile classical does not go for much these days. I doubt it will sell.

Have you seen what Deccas, esp. the WB the seller mentioned, are going for on eBay? Minimum of $100 up to thousands if it's a really rare title such as the Stravinsky, Ibert, etc :) Good EMIs will fetch up to $100. Some early EMI rarities have gone for $2500. Mercurys and RCAs around $25 to 50. Other audiophile curiosities even more. For instance, Wilson, and not that I would pay it, are going for $75+.

That's why would want to see what's in the collection before buying. Plug one can still negotiate the price down.

I would agree with you Lee. From the selection that I saw in the ad, it would appear that there are several good titles that are valuable, but that the vast majority are common titles with very little value.:( So, in sum, the question is if there are enough valuable titles to add up to $125K in value.....I think not:D.
OTOH, I am very interested to see if this price can be obtained, because it would be a good arbiter of value for a large collection. Those of us who happen to own such a collection often wander how much value it would have in its entirety. In my case, i suspect that i have far more of the collectible titles than the seller on ebay is offering and this would be a nice confirmation of their value:D.
However, it also seems to me, that the seller is being a little, shall we say- 'lazy', by not trying to sell each title by itself and thereby garnering top value for each LP. Unless of course he knows that the total value of the collection is less than what he is asking......which I highly suspect that he does:eek:

I've known of several large collections that have been sold to audiophiles in Asia. Hell if you're a zillionaire, what's a 100 K? Like the article a while back in TAS about that Chinese audiophile :)

Same is true for, if not even more, for jazz LPs. There's a huge market for jazz LPs in Japan, in large part because these LPs didn't make it overseas in the postwar years. Ergo, their great value there.

Myles, presumably that is the kind of Buyer this Seller is trying attract. I would imagine that when a large collection sells in its entirety, that the Buyer must have attributed some value to the fact that he/she doesn't have to collect the individual pieces over the many years . IMO, there is definitely value to this aspect, the question is how much?:confused:
Nonetheless, i still do not believe that this particular Seller's collection has enough individual value to add up to his asking price......:( I would like to be wrong about this, but I very seriously doubt I am:(.

That's kind of a rule of thumb I use to validate an equipment purchase. Will I be happier spending the money on equipment or spending an equal amount on new software?!

Or the equipment will always be around but not the LPs :)

One of the key aspects of this sale is the condition of the LPs. Mint LPs from reputed sellers are always expensive. If they are all in mint condition as referred by the seller the collection must be valued also on this aspect - buying 5000+ LPs individually selected seems too good to be true. Any of the shown LPs in the photos in near mint condition will easily sell at the german Ebay for more than 20 euros ~30 usd.
However a collection played once with a ruined stylus is not worth the shipping charges.

Unhappily we are only shown a few photos of the collection - last time I bought a collection of 500 LPs the seller sent me a long excel file with all the details - even code numbers!

Yes, yes and yes. How many Kogans do you think are in there Myles?

All it takes is one or two :)

But that's why said anyone who is contemplating buying this collection should spend the airfare and check it out before buying ;)
