We are spending New Year’s Eve at the Viceroy Hotel in San José del Cabo, and this weekend happens to be the public opening weekend of the hotel’s rooftop restaurant and lounge.

For some reason we were upgraded to the most amazing hotel room we have ever stayed in:

There is a semi-outdoor but covered private whirlpool hot tub on the balcony:

Los Cabo’s is a great place with amazing big game fishing!

The Viceroy looks like a very nice place, is it north of downtown?

My dad used to take me on the best fishing trips here. We caught 100+ lb. Marlin and of course some very sore arms and legs from the hour long battles getting them on the boat. Great memories. Enjoy your time Ron. My wife and I are leaving for the Bahamas on Wednesday for 5 days at the Atlantis.

“Los Cabos” refers collectively to the city of Cabo San Lucas and the town of San José del Cabo. I get nervous about statistics like that, but after spending a week there it is extremely difficult to understand where that statistic could possibly come from. Los Cabos is the golden tourist goose of the entire country.

Last year the hotel and restaurant and transportation company owners in San José del Cabo got together and organized and financed private security arrangements, including a procedure which records which vehicle and driver takes you from the airport to your hotel, and from your hotel to any local destination. The hotel constantly asked us our room number when we left the hotel and recorded the name of the driver and license plate of the vehicle which picked us up. Restaurants asked us our name and from what hotel we came.

If a tourist were kidnapped in San José del Cabo I suspect the hotel owners themselves would pool resources and pay the ransom and pay the victim a huge sum to sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Maybe murders occur inland and up the Baja peninsula way North of Los Cabos? Maybe murders occur between drug gangs supplying drugs to Cabo San Lucas, the drinking/party city West of San Jose del Cabo we have no interest in and we did not visit?

The small town closest to Viceroy is San José del Cabo, and it was clean, quaint, old-style and very safe.

I cannot figure out where that murder statistic is coming from.

My favorite part about Cabo was the food... every place I ate was better than any Mexican restaurant in the US and the seafood was, of course, spectacular.

However, it is hard not to recognize a thin veneer of civility is in place for the tourists and walking through many parts of town you may be offered drugs twice on every block. If the police catch you doing anything illegal it's very likely you'll be shook down for everything you have, and possibly threatened with death. These things don't go reported because usually the person was buying drugs or sex. Just north of the airport there is a semi-permanent military checkpoint.

My thoughts are if you stay in a resort and downtown/tourist areas you're fine. If not, and you're not looking for trouble, 99.99% chance you'll be fine too, but you have to remember it's more like the wild west than the US. I think a large majority of the violence is between gangs who want to sell drugs to tourists... stay away from drugs and doing stupid stuff and it's probably fairly safe.

It's getting harder to get proper, legit mexican food even in San Diego!
Most of the spots you see around town are horrible chains of microwaved stuff, or posh "fusion" restaurants.

You don't eat Mexican food? Wow. Too spicy? The best I've had was in the Skagit valley, immigrants and money. Also, Dave, the Wild West had a lower murder rate than any time since :p.

That place really does look amazing.

My brother went to an all inclusive place and felt very safe with friends. They did venture out into town, and it certainly was more ripe with drugs and other things going on. Another friend goes to Mexico, but not near the border, and has no trouble. He's poor and obviously would raise zero money if he were kidnapped, and appears that way - for what that's worth.

LOL, Alex you don't get authentic mexican food in San Diego...! Only a few locals know where to go for that, and most aren't telling!
I know of a few places, mostly towards the border, PM if you are interested. BTW, the real mexican food is an acquired taste ( not really my taste). The rest is for the tourists..

I have no problem with mexican food, I've been to the country many times, DF and elsewhere, and the food has been always delicious!

I've been to many places in Old Town, and they're mostly tourist traps, $16 for a burrito. It's OK, in a pinch it'll do, but legit it ain't.

Guys, Old Town is the state owned tourist trap, LOL. Like Alex stated, it ain't legit. Alex, even at the border in Tijuana, there are a lot of tourist traps...and few legit mexican authentic restaurants. The mexican locals don't believe that the gringo likes their food!!

Don't like the heat? That's one of the reasons I like Mexican food in Mexico, they aren't afraid to make it hot!

One of the dishes I remember was raw tuna tostadas, served with a salsa I'd guess was just finely diced serrano peppers with some spice and lime juice. I'd go back to Cabo just to eat! :)

I also ate at a breakfast restaurant that was awesome, I looked it up online... when I got there I was the only white guy in the entire place and they didn't even have menus in english. It was awesome, went there a few times... but some of the food was HOT! And they don't warn you at all. This place must have been a local's favorite, it was packed every time I went and they even had guys outside directing parking.

Thanks for the head's up. I was only there once ever and that was last year when Sam Mullard 88)and his family from Manila visited and I spent a wonderful day with them having had one of the best authentic Chinese meals I have ever had in La Jolla due to Sam. From there we were taken to Old Town where I've never been and TBH I did think the prices were high but never thought of it as a tourist trap. So thanks for the inside scoop.

. . .

No, I do not care for Mexican food. In general, I do not care for ethnic-type food from any country which formerly came under the umbrella term of “Third World,” unless it is seafood and I can omit the spicey components of the dish.

Why is that surprising? Do all people like the same foods?

An all-inclusive place where? In Los Cabos? Or somewhere in continental Mexico?

I would not go to any city in Mexico other then San Jose del Cabo.

Dave, not all Mexican food is hot. A lot of them actually deheat their stuff.
