I said I would never buy another Turntable...Argh !!!

bad news, good news.

bad news, good news.

bad news is that to facilitate funding for the soon to arrive AS-2000, on Thursday my NVS was shipped out to it's new owner (a WBF member), and my standard Durand 'composite' Telos will ship out tomorrow to that same member. I will leave it for that member to communicate about that. I send my hearty congrats to him. very sad to see these great things leave after delivering so much great music.

I was hoping I could work out not selling those, but that was not in cards, in the short term.

the good news? since 'Wave Kinetics' (my friend Jonathan) knows I want to likely acquire another NVS when my funds recover from the AS-2000 efforts, he has offered to allow me to 'loan/demo/buy' another NVS in the meantime. great relief on my part, as now I will (1) still have vinyl these next couple of months, (2) will have a known reference (with the Telos Sapphire) to compare to the AS-2000, (3) make Tang and Ked happy:rolleyes:, and (4) and me be happy and not sad. the piper will need to be paid at some point......so there is that.

since the Taiko Tana TS-140 has joined the NVS in my system it has really gone to a special performance place and should offer a formidable target for the AS-2000. it will be of particular interest to me, considering the recent buzz on the NOS 3012R over many threads here, how that will compare to the Telos Sapphire on both turntables. my goal is to add one more tone arm prior to AS-2000 arrival and have arm boards for all three tonearms for each tt.

good news on the vinyl back up ! I might of missed it but have decided against active isolation for the AS2000 ? If so, why ?

That is a great outcome, Mike (and a generous gesture by Jonathan)!

10 days ago here in post #892 I did say I was going to go with David's rack design and start out my AS-2000 experience without any active isolation.

after considerable pondering, I've decided to go 'nude' with the initial AS-2000 installation. and I've decided after speaking to David, that i'll be sourcing my support table from him. he is building his own dedicated steel topped and framed table. so for now, no active isolation with the Taiko Tana version of the TS-300 under the AS-2000.....but the new table will be easily able to support a TS-300 should I do that later.

there were a few moving parts to this decision. the least part of it was whether Taiko Tana TS active would work and improve the performance of the stock AS-2000. after all the investigations, and even speaking to David as to how the final version of the motor box would differ from Christian's, I'm very confident that it would work. more significant in the decision was (1) the desire to be able to live with it stock as David built and installed it for awhile before I added the active, (2) just concentrate on as few balls in the air right now as I can, and (3) the investment of the Taiko Tana TS-300 right now when all these other things are at play for me.

I'm relieved to be clear of this issue for now. I do see a Taiko Tana TS-300 in my future when the time is right.

Fantastic. And congrats to the guy who bought, he should pay for your flight to come and set it up for him. He can then have a reference for his own set up. All he now needs is a GFS and a Dartzeel phono.

so that decision had nothing to do with your conclusions listening to the NVS with "Active" isolation ?

no, the opposite. I went the 'nude' direction 'for now', in spite of my increased confidence in Taiko Tana active.

the NVS "stock TS-140 <-->Taiko Tana TS-140" switch on my NVS was significantly positive and if anything, pushed me more toward wanting the same for the AS-2000. and we know that the stock TS-140 already was a winner with the NVS (in my system) to begin with. to relate it to your NDW23 <-> AS-2000 experience, I think the TS-140 stock works, as I think the stock TS-300 would work for the AS-2000. and Taiko Tana TS-3000 better yet.

from the outside my decision might appear some sort of judgement on active. and for some nothing I can say will change that. so be it.

it will be interesting to have 2 suspension-less turntables side by side, one with active Taiko Tana, and the other 'nude', and see what we hear.

Ked, glad you are happy. it was one of my goals that you should be.

the new owner has a good pipeline to some knowledgeable Telos setup people, and i'm ready to help where I can. as far as a GFS and dart, go ahead and encourage him. he has fine phono stage and cartridge choices already in his system which should work great.

Well then, I won't. Might make sense to once visit him and see how the NVS and Durand fare with his cart and phono.

Excellent news. I am happy for you Mike. But this is no surprise, I knew you had a backup plan and exit strategy for all scenarios.
I really don’t know whether it is you or me who would get the AS setup next. Jarek targets to ship his rack beginning of March earliest. If no delay it will arrive no later than end of March depending on seafreight or airfreight. I haven’t really talked to David about his availability. I just leave it at his convenient. It’s already nice of him to fly half the globe to do a setup for me. Marc Gomez will also be visiting me before Munich to install his arm. I am very curious about the 3012R too. Exciting time to come :b.

Kind regards,
Tang

thank you Tang, I am relieved to have my NVS's here as a reference. otherwise I would have been a bit unhinged.

we both are approaching a very exciting time. I do expect that you will go first, but agree we will have to see how it plays out. my earliest time would be mid April. my plan is to get the air box 30 days early and get it installed upstairs with the remote switch and the hose in place so that is done. it will go right where the Rockport Sirius III compressor went.

David has not yet nailed down the timing of the rack he will be building for me. so we both might have turntable parts but no rack to set it on. but somehow I expect it all to work itself out for the best. I will be very interested in how your SAT and 3012R do side by side on the AS-2000. will the SAT be clear champion or will it not be such a simple answer? you already have so many shades of ways to view the music. will this bring a more simple clear better focus to your quest? or add more shades of views? you have such an amazing array of choices. we will all be watching with mouths agape as you peel the onion.

best regards,

Mike

looks like the bottom of the new larger final production motor box. first class delivery. i'd love to reach out and touch that. looks like a primeval eternal kind of thing.

sweet.

did the plinth and platter arrive too, or are they coming over the water due to their weight?

That is the plinth and arm boards in the pelican case picture.

so that's a 240 pound plinth in the pelican case? woah!!! i'll need my 265 pound son over to horse that around. I just assumed you would not have such a deadweight in that case. but now I've been warned.

and.......it's all arrived there at Tang's. cool deal!

The plinth is more like 300lbs....The pelican case allows you to drag it around with the rollers assisting. You cannot pick it off the ground with the handle. 3 people are required to move the plinth out of the case and onto it's support table.

ok, three hundred pounds. that's sobering. we will have to have a plan.

like the man said, "we are going to need a bigger boat".
