My wife said to me last night, "Do you really need a hundred CDs and a couple of hundred LPs (all new-ish purchases) sitting out?" She means not in the shelves. I thought about it for a few minutes and answered, "Yes!" That's how I know what's new. Am I the only one?

Definitely not alone. I'm the same way as well. An album doesn't go on the racks unless I've listened to it through and through at least once. Helps me keep my music buying in check.

I have a special section (pro CD table rack) that holds 40 CDs (SACDs) for the newest music purchases,
and that are next to be manually inserted in one of my CD/SACD spinners for the next listening session (rotation).

And as they are listened too, afterwards they go to their dedicated spot on the wall shelves.
...And automatically more space is gained for the next purchases (next rotations).
And the old stuff goes to the basement, joining company with all my albums. ...And the spiders.

* My preferred discs are all wrapped in transparent plastic sleeves, the entire jewel case. ...Same as most conscientious people do with their LPs. - Not a single grain of dust can enter! ...They all have a closing door (sticky band).

I have my new CDs sitting around until I rip them. Usually a week or two until I find the time. After that, they are put away and that's that :).

Since I'm single I don't have to worry about a wife or g/f commenting on how or where I keep my collection. I'm like you in that any new purchases are never placed in the rack before I have a chance to listen to them at least once. If I didn't do that, and stored them right away, I would forget what I bought and they could then not get played for a long time. LOL!

That's what has happened with my HD video titles. When the formats launched, I bought every movie for a while and I put them on the shelf. To this day I have many titles that are never opened!

I wash and listen to every record before it goes in the rack. I have about 100 cleaned and ready to listen to in the queue currently.

I use road cases, like the one above, for new LPs. They split in half, effectively turning into two modules. Very easy to flip through and the cases look decent in the room. They can be had in a variety of colors.

I have a rule that I have to listen to new music all the way through twice before racking. If there are more than 10 un-racked records, there is a self-imposed buying moratorium. It's bad vinyl karma to buy and then not to listen...

i do keep new records on the floor 'un-racked' until i get a chance to listen at least a couple of times. i don't always clean new records.

the exception is my 'Mark' section of new current Lps where i cannot always 'get through' 2 listenings. this special section does then allow me to come back later with a fresh viewpoint and take another stab at it. then when 'Mark' comes over he knows where to find his recs.;)

i do appreciate getting pushed into trying out current pop/rock even though it's many times painful. at least i'm exposed to the stuff and some of it is pretty good.

i've maybe bought a dozen CD's or SACD's over the last few years so i don't even have any system anymore to deal with new ones (no room for any either with 5000 already on the shelves). the RR HRX's i immediately load onto my server.

Ahh, 'the Mark' section. So you are saying you're not digging The Gutter Twins or The Kills :D ?

BTW, I consider it a personal triumph that Joel Durand is now 'the cool professor' at the UW School of Music because he's hooked on Opeth!

no, not at all. it's that i have not quite progressed culturally to that level of decadence. but i'm working feverishly on it.:D

yes, i felt very guilty when Joel allowed me to win that Opeth pressing on ebay. like i was holding his develpoment back or something.
