UltraAnalogue Tapes was created by Ed Pong, a now retired orthodontist who lives near Toronto, Canada. His catalogue of close to 100 tape reels are all classical chamber and solo music which Ed records in his home studio concerto hall. Many of the tapes are from live performances at his home, with small, and very quiet audiences. I started buying Ed's tapes in 2011, and have continued to buy almost all his releases. Of all the entities that record their artists (not license existing recordings) Ed has done the most remarkable job in finding internationally renowned young classical performers. Here are four. Alena Baeva won the Wieniawski Violin Competition in 2001 at the age of 16. Later she won the Moscow Paganini Competition and the Sendai International Music Competition. I met with Ed Pong and his wife Amy in London in 2019 and we went to see Alena performing the Schumann Violin Concerto with the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra in Oxford and met Alena after the concert. Vadym Kholodenko won the 2013 Van Clibum International Piano Competition. Narek Hakhnazaryan won the 2011 International Tchaikovsky Competition for Cello. We heard Narek in San Francisco in a chamber music concert with his ZEN trio. Cellist Hayoung Choi won the Queen of Elisabeth of Belgium Cello Competition in 2022. She is the most recent of Ed's musicians.
Ed describes his recording set up, including vintage tubes in his amplification chain, along with his Studer A80 tape machine on his website www.ultraanaloguerecordings.com. I have over 90 reels purchased over the past 14 years and am continued to be impressed by both the sound quality of his performers and artistry of his performers. You can get a sense of his recordings on his youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/@ultraanaloguerecordings/videos.
