Rhino is jumping into the reel to reel format with the release of 2 albums, “The Yes Album” and T-Rex’s “Electric Warrior”. Both are priced at $299 for a single reel (LPR90 stock). 1/2 track - 15ips.
On one hand, I am happy to see Rhino jumping into tapes.
[Edit. I stand corrected. I was told they are using 807s for duping.]
Two years ago, someone I know had approached WB about getting a license to release their stuff on tape too. That would have been done on pro or a top new consumer machine. But the contract specified they had to sell 500 copies and that was the sticking point. There’s no way going to sell 500 15-ips tapes so they were looking at trying to sell 200 15-ips and 300 7-1/2 ips 4 track tapes to meet that minimum. But nothing apparently came of it and Rhino decided to go it alone.
PS I would be curious to compare my 15 ips copy of Yes with the Rhino release. I love my tape copy.
Good to hear. Rhino may be a game-changer as far as the selection of titles for RTR albums. If one has no interest the jazz genre, the title selections available for RTR music are quite poor.
My Yes Album tape just arrived, but I've not listened to it yet.

I got the two new Rhino tapes this weekend. Four day delivery to California (from California). The Yes Album has great sound. The T.Rex is very good, but not great. I don't have an original vinyl of either one - so I can't comment on the quality vs. an original. I do have a tape copy of the Yes Album (15ips 2 track NAB EQ from a tape trade buddy). The Rhino is definitely better. I bought the two tape package for $569. They were done on LPR90, so each album only takes one reel, with a great price. Rhino has a very large catalogue of pop/rock - so hopefully they are or will be licensed by Rhino for future tapes. Beautiful packaging - glossy inserts including a copy of the master tape - hopefully this is the source of the tape - or perhaps from a dub of the master. They also say that there will be a limit of 500 copies.
Here is a link to a webcast with the 2 guys from Rhino responsible for the reel to reel project. There will be 1 more reel in 2025 and 2 in the spring.
I think they did a really good job with the Yes Album.
