As much as I believe I've heard additional improvements with equipment >200 hours break - in, I can't help believing some if not all of the improvement is confirmation bias for us all. Without an A B X compare, we're all just giving our subjective opinions.

there are also the GMIA moments that happen in audio when everything is just working prefect and the system sounds great. I believe that some may mistake this or perhaps just call it break in. I think three to five days should be sufficient time to take a listen and hear what something does. If it takes 500 hours , in my personal opinion, to sound good , that will never happen with me, since it will be long gone.
Getting used to something is not the same as break in , nor should it be.
When someone told me once that a footer takes like 300 hours all I could do was laugh. I have a sale of some older bridges this weekend and they can be had cheap!

They can't be separated, especially because the change can many days to weeks. We fool ourselves into thinking, yes, I can tell the difference between the benefit over time (break - in, burn-in), versus simply becoming acclimated to the change in sound. I'd wager that reality is - acclimating is as much if not more than the change itself. It's called confirmation bias.

 

So this morning a new client to whom we are installing his new system later this week came in to say hello .
I am doing a full room install with acoustic treatments, rack, electronics, speakers cables the whole nine yards.
I have played my system for him a few times and he is a good listener and music lover but far from an audiophile.
I wanted to get his reaction to the system as it is now configured with the Everest X in it , which was not there the last time he came bye.

His reaction was great and made me smile, about 1 minute in I could hear him say holly ------. He said to me I loved what I heard before but now this is like having the group in the room for real, everything sounds like I am sitting right in front of these guys.

My thoughts to those who are thinking about an Everest X, you need to experience this baby, if it does for you what it did for me you will be smiling too.

 

Great to hear, Elliot. I have the original Everest, and that's how I felt when it went into my system a few years ago. I will be upgrading to the X when that is available as an upgrade. I anticipate another jump in performance then.

I also am waiting for some Sigma X QR cables for my amps. I know it will be good, it's just amazing what these products can do!

Has anyone compared the Everest to the new Puritan 1156 NFR, a couple guys in another group said they felt it best the Everest…

 

I have in my place a Gemini 8, Typhon 2 and Denali as well as the new Everest X.
To understand noise its quite enlightening to listen to a system with first nothing, then the Gemini 8, then the Typhon/Denali and finally with the Everest X.
These changes are really easy to hear as it seems that slowly this blanket of noise that is prevalent in and around the music gets pulled back and away from the instruments and reveals more and more of the tone, shape, size and dynamic range of the instrument or vocal and the reveal becomes like someone is going from a very dark space to one that has light. I say light not bright as it is not an accentuation of the signal but rather a clarity that is available along with the space around this clarity when the noise is pulled back.
BTW I am not pulling any amplifiers into any of these since I wanted to keep this all equal.
In my past I have not truly loved amps into power devices ( I do use the Typhon T30 now in my big system with all my amps) so in this session I just made it simple and easy for me to do.

The X is IMO a must for a serious system and you won't get it until you get one. I could not imagine what it would do until it did it.

 

I agree, I don't have the X (yet) but one thing I see in other power conditioners is they tend to lean out the sound. Everest actually reveals more bass heft and gives a kind of relaxed feel between the notes but when dynamic swings are needed, provides them in a dramatic fashion. It's very musical, not mechanical, not lean, not bright, etc.

 

I think that is a truly interesting and excellent question. Its one that I know I can't answer. I believe that most of us feel that a particular component takes some time to reach its full performance after it is initially installed.
In my opinion after 3-5 days should be sufficient for everything. I am not sure that this is the peak of break in or even if it can continue to improve for longer periods of time. I don't know how to measure that or even go about perceive it per se.
I am aware that when I unplug things and ship them , say for a show, that they truly need at least 24 hours to stabilize again, and maybe longer to fully "charge up"
I think my point here is that after 3-5 days there is no true measure of anything . It either is working and sounding good or to be honest I just don't care. I believe for me that is enough time for one to decide its go time.
BTW I do this with everything . I like to play it for 3 days , when new, before I seriously listen, no bs excuses, its either then or never for me.
I wrote wat I said in 34 for since there was a weekend involved and I am not here for Sunday and Monday and that's just because not something that is purposely thought out.

Most of my Shunyata PCs required 2-3 weeks for the treble to settle, but those Omega XLR cables...took around 2 months to go from lean and steely to dark and velvety. No doubt it was the silver, and that is probably why other PCs since the NR v2 range take so long to settle, but wow.


Denali2+T2 probably took 1-2 weeks, which is better, but I've learned to be patient because it's always way longer than they say.

 

It is IMO impossible to know how long full break in actually takes. I will say that changing to the Everest X versus the Denali even with the Typhon 2 was easy to hear right out of the box. I do believe that the system continued to show growth from the product for a period of time however after 4-5 days most of what happened. Perhaps you are right with cables which some do take a very long time but IMO most gear after a few days should be able to show its "truth" IMO if it takes hundreds of hours I am non believer and probably would not still be using it.
I am positive if you stuck and Everest X in your system you would hear the difference right away

 

I just received the Altaira-X new grounding device. It is one piece that has 8 full isolated modules so you can ground everything to one unit. That works for my system in that I have 7 items.
I just hooked it up but the X - cables are somewhere else in the UPS universe and should be delivered later. So I will let the system play as is with the standard cables and then stick the X in later or whenever it shows up. Want an Altaira system? both units I have one I am not using LOL

I probably should start a new thread. I understand that I am one of the few that have received the Altaira X unit and X cables. I installed the unit yesterday with the cables that I was using on the two unit Altaira cores the chassis and signal units. These have all been connected to the Everest X so the whole front end is plugged into the Everest and its all been grounded. I replaced the original hubs with the single chassis X version. With the X you don't need to isolate one type of ground from another each individual connection I am told is a separate module and is completely self contained.
I did this in two stages since UPS managed to deliver the two X series grounding cables today and not with the rest of my orders that arrived yesterday. The "X " version with the original cables after playing for 5-6 hours I sat and gave a brief listen to see what was going on. I could hear immediately that something had changed and in my super quiet 'noiseless" system somehow things got better. There was more space and information at the same time. Well that's good and I went home . So this morning when the X cables came in ( only have two) I called Grant to find out what he suggests as the best place to use them in my system. One from the X to the Everest X and then he said to do the DAC. Bad news for me since my DAC requires two cables . OH well so next choice was my server with its optional power supply so that's where it went. I left the stuff to play for a few hours and just went in the room with a client of mine who showed up and we did some listening.
I know the cables are not burned in. I know from the past that at least 24 hours is required just to get in the ball park but I don't care
We sat I played some of my best recordings to see what is happening.
We both had to clean the drool off our chins.
People throw words around like musicality ( my most unfavorite audio term since its a meaningless word which basically is the word everyone uses when they don't know what to say or don't know or whatever its the universal BS term IMO)
The system is just playing music. There is music in my room. There is the illusion that a group and its members are playing.
I started with Pebble Dance- John Surman, went to two incredible guitarists playing Miles Davis 's So What by Sylvain Luc and Birelli Lagrene from Summertime - hell yeah this is killer, Minority from Nenad Vasilic Bass and strings, The Waking by Kurt Elling and we ended with a regular cut that he loves AJA from Steely Dan.
If it is going to get better count me in
What do I think? I think that I was totally unprepared for what I could get from my EMM MTRX monos. I did not think that a 1000 watt SS amp can do this. I didn't know that really quiet was going to be not quiet by a longshot. I did not know that I after all this time could surprise myself LOL
