Recording Your Stereo

I know it's a compromise, but other than our cell phones, are there any recommended recording methods/gear that can highlight differences in systems and setups?

The Sony PCM-D100 is supposed to be pretty good. I know a couple people that use these to record rooms at Hifi shows. All these PCM recorders do have a sound signature of their own, though. Nevertheless, they're a big improvement over cell phone mics.
