I had Acoustats for almost 20 years, I'm pretty familiar with their sound...:)

Wow 20 years, that's a long time to make up your mind.

I have always found sealed subs a better match to dipoles due to the improved transient response, and sealed servo designs best. Otherwise you risk the sub's ringing messing up the bass. At LF the panels and the sub both look like a point source due to the wavelengths involved. As for needing subs, well, classical orchestral music, organ music, jazz, a lot of stuff digs deeper than most panels. The low E string on a bass guitar is around 42 Hz, and that does not account for the percussive attack of fingers plucking strings, piano hammers, drums, etc.

I own panels now (Magnepan) and have had lots of time, admittedly years ago, with numerous stat's in and out of my system, Model 9's, Dayton, Acoustat, Beveridge, Quad, etc.

He looked so happy standing next to those huge planar speakers. RIP Andre.

You know... I thought of an idea in memory of our brother audiophile...

How about we buy an album he recommended to us? I searched for his alias and "music" and landed on this very nice recommendation: http://www.whatsbestforum.com/showthread.php?6856-Classical-music-with-a-touch-of-jazz

Couldn't find a download version on hdtracks so bought the CD through Amazon. Will be thinking of you Mr. Acoustat everytime I play it....

Thank you, Amirm. A great idea and great music. I just bought the same album for the same reason. You know...amongst fellow WBF members, i must confess a personal anecdote here with Mr. Acoustat.

I got a PM from him out of the blue (never really emailed with him directly before) requesting a photo of our Zanden setup...just so he could see it as a big Zanden-phile. In all these years, i think i have sent maybe 1 photo of my system out ever...just a personal thing.

I honestly hesitated, for several weeks, but his PM seemed genuine and eventually, I did send one to him privately despite having some reservation. And he wrote back a very nice note.

A few months later, he passed away. I have to say, I am glad i sent him the photo. You cannot get that time back. RIP.

Indeed

He also reached out to me because he knew that I owned many different Acoustat speakers over the years
