A friend of mine has a mint pair of Concert Grands that I am thinking of purchasing but do not know much about them. What kind of amplification? How big of a room would I need? Any other considerations?

It is of historical note that Wilma Cozart Fine had a pair of these in her living room and used a Sid Smith modified Marantz 7C and a pair of Marantz 8B's to drive them. Wilma is directly responsible for the sound of all of the Mercury Living Presence Classical pressings and I think much of the sound quality is due to the fact she would take a freshly cut lacquer engineered by her husband Robert home to her house on Long Island and sit down with a glass of wine to evaluate it in her living room. She would make notes and changes would be made the next day and the process repeated until she was happy with the sound. I think the fact that the final evaluation of the test cut was made in a living room system rather than in a studio on studio monitors goes a long way to explaining the unique quality of these pressings. Their son Tom is in the audio world and can elaborate on this.

Bozak is relatively unknown in the high end world but they were an interesting company with really good products. Along with speakers they made a complete line of complimentary electronics. A few years ago I heard a pair of their smaller speakers and their ss amps from late 60's or very early 70's with a pair of early McIntosh mono preamps, the sound was incredibly good and pure.

I bought a pair of Concert Grands after hearing the small ones, they're incredible bargains for what you get. You should unload your friend of his burden :D!

Not to mention making the dj mixer behind those early disco-era soundsystems used by the likes of Levan and Mancuso that were surprisingly well done...
