Couple of years ago, a young German guy who posted on the Apogee groups showed some pictures of his accident on the autobahn. He was driving his parents' full size Audi. What was impressive was how totaled the car was and how relatively uninjured he was.

He wound up starting WWII again by ranting against the Dutch and their inferior appliances cluttering up the autobahn, because his accident was in the "slow" lane when he came up on a Netherlands vehicle going so slow he wound up skidding and hitting some kind of barrier.

Of course, the Dutch members of the Apogee blog started cussing him and his arrogant Germanness out, it was pretty interesting watching the territorial dispute unfold from the vantage point of an American ignoramus, it became rather heated. Guess it is good you can't fire a machine gun over the internet.

I do the trip from the UK to Austria six times each year. Round trip around 2000 miles. A good part of the run is German autobahn from Aachen through to the Austrian border at Kufstein.

In warmer months we use our Maybach Zeppelin which is just great for cruising at 140mph for a good part of the journey.

Negatives for driving on these roads include;
Poorly signed arbitrary speed limits
Frequent narrowing from 3 lanes to 2 lanes
The occasional inexperienced foreigner who will block the fast lane

Apart from that, they are great fun.

Winter months we take the Porsche Cayenne Turbo which is comfortable cruising at 125mph but a bit noisy above that.

If you are not used to high speed driving, then do take it gently at first.

Two weeks ago I was in the passenger seat on the autobahn at 140mph, it was the fasted I'd been since 145mph in my 911. It was fun and exhilarating.
