Is Wilson losing their marketing edge?

Are those type of ceiling good for the sound?
Even though they act like a giant absorber, my general experience is "NO." Here is the picture for others who have not seen my Wilson AXPONA report which Bob is referring to:

With the combination of wall-to-wall carpeting, you can get a dead, non-involving room. This one evens curtains in the back.

Thanks Amir; I was going to post that same exact picture.

And just a guess: that entire system setup must be over a quarter million dollars.
Not that it's important, not @ all, just a realistic mention for only the ones who consider its relevance.
I like the fact that they are using the prime four music mediums: Analog tape, analog vinyl, digital CD and digital music server (hi-res audio).

As for the room and ceiling; I do understand its first priority use...and functionality.
Audio shows are all for fun and business in those type of premises. And it's not the rooms they are selling; that people already have.

I always wanted to ask where does Alon gets his suits from ;) That said, David's is no better, lol. Oh well - nobody is perfect.

They make good speakers though.

Hey, the less they spend on their clothes, the more they can put into their companies' R&D - to please their fans.

I never said they were cheap. It was a general remark about the 80s style they both seem to prefer.

I know what you mean. And I think we can agree it's not Brioni or Kiton, yet the guys are selling speakers that cost more than a fully optioned out porsche 911.

The Wilson Alexx speakers were the best room at Axpona to me. I was underwhelmed by the Magico room. I love the construction of the Magico speakers but their sound does not sound like real music to my ears.

Another thing that bothers me is that I approached Alon in a very friendly manner at Axpona and he was pretty cool. He has lots of attitude. You would think that at a show he would at least be in friendly sales mode. It left me cold. Maybe he was having a bad day but several others noted it.

Lee,

Obviously speaker taste - is taste... Did you get to hear the High Water Audio room?

Also, I think you raise a very important point regarding likability. Very recent marketing research shows that people view brands as they view other people, judging brands on both competence and warmth. If both are missing, forget about it. But if one is kind of there for you, and one is not there, the brands are valued less. Whereas Dave Wilson comes across as a warm grandfather figure, Wolf sometimes comes across harsh. Business is a tough thing, but Wolf is the face of the brand. How you come across with fans helps shape that "warmth" element of the brand. It all matters.

I've actually had nice exchanges with Mr. Wolf both in person and in emails. And I only have the discontinued Mini II, which I bought used. He was very cordial, answered specific technical questions and was very responsive to emails, even while he was traveling. I guess everyone's experience can be different. I bought my speakers based on these priorities listed in order: sound, technology, appearance and build quality. They are all at a very high level, and the combination of these four attributes represented the best value at the time for me while I was looking for a new pair of speakers.

I only had interactions with Mr. Wolf after I bought my speakers.

EDIT: Sorry, I just realized this is a Wilson speaker thread in the Wilson forum. I apologize for being off topic.

I've had the pleasure hosting Alon and his partner Yaier at my home several years ago and he was very cordial

Peter, I have had no interactions with him whatsoever. Just commenting on what people are saying. Plus, that Roysen incident was ugly!

So all this ink and you never even talked to the man?
Why don’t you talk to Wolf first, and then came back and trash him

I don't really have anything to talk to him about. But this thread is about marketing. In marketing, perception is reality. How he is perceived by others, and by his public actions in the Roysen incident affects how people view the brand.

You mean the way YOU view the brand. I remember a crook trying to make a buck getting exposed (If I remember correctly, it happened to a couple of other manufacturers as well, all here on WBF).

Perception is a subjective thing, performance is more difficult to dismiss, although some do that all the time...

This thread is or was about Wilson's marketing. Why bash Wolf and Magico and bring up that Roysen incident? That was highly controversial and there were two sides to that story. You just seem to fan the flames, caesar. We get that you don't like Magico. Discuss it in another thread, or find something else to rant about, please.

Perception and reality. That reminds me of what people said about the famous contemporary composer Stockhausen. Arrogant and cultish, a horrible personality, or so they said. Well, I actually met him, and he was a very cordial person with lots of human warmth, and there was nothing cultish around his personality as much as I could see.

Yes, and it should be read from the beginning.

Post #50 tells people everything they need to know about the difference between WA and Magico.

The M5/Q5 was a marketing mistake, IMO, and must have been difficult on both the dealers and M5 owners. It did mark a real turning point in Magico's direction.

I do not think that post #50 tells people everything they need to know about the differences between the two brands. For instance, how they sound different from each other.
