Does anyone have experience with the TD-2002 and TD-4003?

Can anyone suggest why you would take a TD-2002 over a TD-4003? I would like to include one in my new two-way build covering everything north of 800hz.

It depends on several things. From the outset there is a difference between how Large vs Small format drivers sound. Critical to that is where your crossover point is to the woofer and just as important what type of horn/waveguide will you be using. Chances are you may need a tweeter to help out the 4003 but not 2002.

It's a bunch of trade offs that you won't really know until you do some basic measurements with the actual compression driver and horns you will be using.

You have to look at on axis and the power response as examples. Are you going to go CD where you match directivity at the crossover or go exponential where even if you do the power response rolls off because of the differences between how the on axis response in EQ'd.

Ask @christensenleif@msn.com

My guess is 2002 is better for the highs, to come down to 800 hz you are better off with 4003. And 2001 is also good lower.

I intend on using the TL-1601b driver crossed at around 800hz. The horn is Joseph Crowe's improved Altec 15 cell (https://www.pinterest.ch/pin/636696466074862086/).

Perhaps I will ask the dealer instead if I can leave a bond/deposit and trial a few drivers ahead of settling on a pair. I know they have some used models which they may be fine with loaning out for some testing.

Ok you are going old school. I would just follow the Altec guidelines and if you can borrow for trials it would be a good idea. You are going to need a throat adapter to switch drivers. Have Fun!

@blaze182

not sure if this is relevant still, but I´ve had both in JMLC 270 and 2500 full rollback bandpassed at 6K
now I run 4003 from 600 to 20K in custom CD horn and don´t miss tweeter
shelved it measures flat to 20K in 85x 45 degrees dispersion

@christensenleif@msn.com can I ask what your take is on the 2002 and 4003 as a side-by-side? When would you take one over the other? I saw in a much older thread that you had experience with both.

In a few weeks I'll visit Seoul's hifi department store to buy one or the other.

I ended up getting a pair of 1602 instead of the 1601, so the target X is 900hz @12db

it depends on what horn you plan to use
the 2002 will have a higher "breakup" frequency, but I doubt you´ll hear it
the 4003 has more kick since it´s a 1,5 exit driver

While I originally was excited for the 15 Cell, I think I'll go a JMLC or biradial.

The entire design is going back and forth over several variants, so I have flexibility at the moment with the horn selection

Do you have any thoughts on the 4002/Z against the 4003?

2002 and 4003 is in a different league, especially if you go for no tweeter
with JMLC or biradial you MUST have tweeter...JMLC is beaming...no good above 5-6K
a friend who made my horns is making a series of constant directivity horns for horn drivers....55cm wide and with 2002 or 4003 it will play from 900/600 and all the way up to 20K with even frequency response in 90x45 degrees dispersion
there´s also a pair of super mint 2002 for sale in Norway by a close friend.....
PM if interested in any....

Very good point on the beaming.
Do you have any reference for the horn shape/design? Just so I could contemplate the possible integration with the designs I'm thinking of?

PMd regarding your friend.

We have a studio customer that uses TD-2001/2002 from 500Hz/-24db with large horns. No problem if you know what you do.

No need to talk about 4003 because its not available. 2002 is available once a year, depending on production.

TD-4002Z IS available, NOS, and comes close to 4003 with little tweaks.

Of course its all up to the horn. TH-4003 with TD-4002Z is what I suggest.

At the end its the fastest/stiffest/lightest material that you hear that makes the difference.

Once heard, never forgotten.

Has anyone tried the celestion axi driver? It should work without problems in a 90cm heyder radial horn from 250hz-18khz with a 12db filter.
