Seeking to upgrade my current preamplifier. I am looking for a tube preamplifier, specifically a line stage as I do not require a phono stage.
I am looking for new only and my maximum budget is $7500.00. I was looking at the following 2 preamps, the Conrad Johnson ET6-SE, but that preamp did not come with a balance control. The other preamp was the Rogue Audio RP-9 preamp that is fully and comes with a balance control. The seating arrangement in my listening room necessitates a balance control. The only issue with the Rogue is that it uses 6H-30 tubes, which may have availability issues. I hear good things about the RP-9, but I am open to suggestions.
Thank you for listening.

hello, be ready for long ride . very few good preamps out there. i have tried 100s of preamps -- not because i like to - but because most apply varying degrees of damage to the signal. here is what i found works for me - look for simple circuits( (2) 12au7 tubes usually enough) with low to moderate gain (5 to 10db) with high-quality parts and beefy power supplies. a good quality volume pot is also wanted. most of the commercial units sterile/brittle/crinkly/metallic/etched/etc. So if you want a non-fatiguing sound that you can listen for hours++, you may have to go down custom route - ask a builder like don sachs (he no longer builds) to make something with your personal voicing and features. however, if you do like the typical commericial sound (which generally aims for resolution and attempted neutraility), you have a lot of choices. For a recommendation on commerical units, Beckert Labs Rhythm line stage is worth looking at- on the edge of being reasonably priced- within your budgetbbbbbbb.

There is just one of these left now, at one third the retail price:
This was Roger Hebert's best preamp and was well reviewed. There are links to reviews here. I am utterly delighted with mine.
