I'm wanting to get into R2R but have limited space... basically it would sit on a shelf I'm building next to my wall shelfs that hold all my equipment. What a good more on the compact size unit that's a good place to start with R2R? I plan to do some recordings and buy some old pre recorded tapes.

Thanks in advance!

Since you did not state your budget or format, here are two good compact choices - Lyrec Frida, or Digitec F500

Frida is a full function deck with meters, while the F500 normally comes with no indicators or level controls. Both have 3 speeds and are 2-track machines.

Frida is more elegant but I prefer the F500 mostly for its sound.

Oh wow. Very cool. Maybe looking for more of a consumer sized situation but researching those two fully now. Might have to make room

Great, and it makes sense to define your needs in more detail.

1. Your budget
2. Tape formats you need, including speeds
3. Reel size - is 7" enough, or you want 10"?
4. Horizontal or vertical operation
5. RCA or XLR interface

$2500 budget, not sure about format and speeds since I'm a beginner. I think 7" would be enough but not ruling out 10". Probably vertical would be easiest to find a place for and RCA interface. Thanks!

For compact, affordable and serviceable under $2500 you won't do much better than this vintage machine from Pioneer. As I recall there were 7" reel only unit, as well as a 10.5" that would, of course, support 7" reels. Good luck!

A very interesting choice would be Revox G36 - the company's last tube unit. It can be found for around $1000 in good condition, has a choice of formats and wonderful sound. It is fairly compact and can be operated either horizontally or vertically. Comes in a carrying case with a lid.

Hello Fishfood,

Is your objective here just to have fun playing tapes on a machine, or is your objective also to surpass sonically your primary music source?
