Ravi Shankar, the celebrated Indian musician who appeared at Woodstock and many other venues passed away here in San Diego tonight. He was 92 .:(:(

A quote:

While he enjoyed Otis Redding and the Mamas and the Papas at the festival, he was horrified when Jimi Hendrix lit his guitar on fire.
"That was too much for me. In our culture, we have such respect for musical instruments, they are like part of God," he said.

-- R.I.P. Ravi

He has two daughters who are both singers/musicians; Norah Jones and Anoushka Shankar.

-> I share with you both your Dad's loss,
and my heart beats the same rhythm as your own heartbeat.

He was awarded another Grammy nomination. So sad...

I cued up some of his recordings in his honor.......

Let's not forget he spawned an infinite amount of musical fusions..changed George Harrison's life.....and fathered the great Norah Jones, and Anoushka Shankar.

RIP Ravi Shankar.

He was a wonderful musician, and because the Indian musical scale is different from the Western, sometimes confused the audience. One anecdote I recall - he was performing at a concert in New York city in the 1970's, and when he got on stage, spent 5 minutes twanging and strumming away. When he stopped, the audience burst into appreciative applause. Whereupon he took the mike and said something like, "Wow, if you liked my tuning-up so much, I hope that you like my music too." Then he begun playing his set :)

We called him "Raving Chancres" when I was a student at Berzerkley. Now I feel guilty.

There was a wonderful pic of him in concert back in the day using a whole row of Quad 57's as his sound support. He had a good run~
I imagine hanging out with the Beatles at the height of their fame was pretty interesting*.....

*Actually, in keeping with the spirit of the times, I should have said 'must have been a trip...". :)
