iPhone 5 – Is it Worth the Money?

Does anyone know whether you can do Facetime on cellular with the iphone 5. You can use wifi with the iphone 4, but not cellular. I read in some preview that it will do Facetime with cellular, but nothing so far from the reviews or Apple website. Thanks, Larry

iphone 4s does face time so iphone5 should as well (but you need wifi)

The 5 does cellular, unlike the 4S which is only wifi

good to know as I always felt that was a drawback to facetime requiring wifi

So far only Sprint and Verizon have committed to supporting Facetime on existing data plans. ATT has restricted it to mobile share (family) plans only. 4/4S should work over cellular on these networks too as long as they're upgraded to iOS6. The hardware isn't the determinant of facetime over cellular capability AFAIK.

FYI:

Via Macworld:
"Apple has confirmed to Macworld that these adapters [Lightning to the old connector] support analog and USB audio-out, ...........as well as syncing and charging. However, the adapters don’t support video-out or iPod mode, the latter a special mode that lets particular accessories, such as car stereos and some whole-home-audio systems, display your iPod’s menus on the accessory’s own screen. More cryptically, the online Apple Store’s product pages note that “some 30-pin accessories are not supported.”

So get ready to buy a new car to go with that new phone :D. And a new AVR.....

Amir,

For most cars, the adapter will work just fine, as they only require the audio output, either analog or digital, that are both supported by the adapter.
Only BMW and Mini cars are able to display the menus on their dashboard displays.

Steve & all,

It's not the iPhone 5, it's iOS 6. If you update your existing iPhone 4 to the new OS, you'll get Facetime over cellular. And you don't even have to wait a year to get the latest OS version from your vendor :D
