The only time I would allow both sides of the disk to be exposed and unsupported is if the TT was in a separate room from the speakers. The big ball around the arm bearing is ridiculous and increases mass and therefore, inertia. The disk should be fully supported so it doesn't vibrate when the sound waves from the speaker hits it.
