Usually, this forum is filled with movie reviews and Oscar chat this time of year. But this year is obviously different. Still, even though theaters are closed, there are many films being released for screening. Many are worth watching. This is one of them.
Ron Howard doesn't make bad movies, and that alone was the reason we chose to watch it. It's a good story, well told, and masterfully acted. The hardest decision the Academy will have to make this year is whether to give the supporting actress Oscar to Glenn Close or Amy Adams. My vote is the former, who steals every scene she is in.
The real surprise was watching the film, and then discovering it was roundly panned. (In my experience, its often the opposite- the movie gets great reviews but was really a stinker). It seems the movie was the unfortunate beneficiary of some hostility due to the politics of the author. The movie an autobiographical account based on a 2016 memoir by J. D. Vance about the Appalachian values of his Kentucky family. Don't let any of this stop you from tuning in. It's quite a riveting tale.
