It's hard to know where to begin with this one. The obvious place is to start is say this isn't just any Frankenstein, but Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein. It is a masterpiece of the genre and a stunner on so many fronts that its just mesmerizing. Incredibly strange, rich, well-acted and directed to perfection, del Toro portrays a monster of profound humanity, power and rage rage with gifted story-telling (he also wrote the screenplay) that you all you can do is marvel at the wonder of it all. He does seem to have a thing for creatures (as his Oscar Winner Shape of Water demonstrated in 2018) but he outdid himself here so don't be surprised if you hear his name called again at Oscar time. He seems to prefer working with many of the same production crew as he has in the past, and their tight-knit unity shows beautiful ensemble work from cinematography to costumes, set design and the like. But it is his vision that makes this movie what it is, which in a word, is simply a great movie. Saying more would only ruin the experience of seeing it yourself. Kudos to Netflix for producing it. It's easy to see why they are quickly becoming the most coveted studio in Hollywood.
