Read the review. A rave. But why would you make a CDP that can't play SACD's? Especially with a $40K price tag. Review indicated they couldn't find a transport manufacturer that fit their criteria. Seems like the Esoteric policy of not making their transports available to others is working.

I almost posted this article yesterday.

An interesting situation.

QUOTE:

The design of the Ethos is intended to evoke Gryphon's digital and vinyl heritage. The design called for a top-loading mechanism that could be aesthetically enhanced to resemble an LP player, and finding a high-quality CD/SACD top-loading mechanism was virtually impossible. So Gryphon went with StreamUnlimited of Austria's CD-Pro 8 drive, which only handles CD.

Yes me too, I almost posted the review yesterday morning. I've waited till someone else did, but nobody else did, so I did late in the day.

The player is cute, it looks like a modern spaceship from the top, designed by Elon Musk.
I was disappointed by the lack of SACD playback. Today you can buy a universal disc player (stereo and multichannel) for less than $200 (a high end one for less than $1,000).

Digestion is hard ... and I would go Esoteric too. Or an analog TT and motor with linear tangential tonearm and cart and phono preamp for the same amount of dough.

* Oppo 205 on eBay.

Well, if I were a member of the "investment class" and just took a beating on Wall Street by only making 2 million that day in lieu of the more expected 10 million, I might buy the Gryphon just to perk myself up. :p

Then put that money wisely towards this instead ...
