Traditional box speakers have gotten so good, do we really need panel speakers in 2012?

Yes.

ABSOLUTELY! When the boxes get as good as the panels, I'll reconsider.

I'm not giving mine up.

BTW, you were being facetious weren't you?

I can foresee I'm gonna be a Maggie guy for a long, long time. :)

I own box speakers and that is a really silly question. Nothing sounds like a great panel speaker, particularly when mated with a great sub.
So the answer is NO!!

Big panels like the SoundLab A1 Px can sound like no other box speakers. They have limitations in low bass and dynamics, but when properly matched they are unique.

Agree ,

still, mine would have to be an hybrid , not giving up anything ...:)

Agreed: to plumb the depth so far nothing replace cones . Moreover the "slow" cone unable-to-keep-up-with-fast-panel notion needs to be put to rest ...

Yes its a fallacy, badly matched anything is going to sound wrong , what most are actually hearing is not speed differential but weight differential. Panel speakers lack percussive energy compared to their dynamic counterparts , this added weight to instruments is what most are hearing , wrongly attributing the issue to speed , of course rise time can be an issue due to mass , properly sized cones with careful attention to radiating pattern will match any panel and be an addition instead of a distraction to its sound ....

Regards ,

The price point at which box speakers sound "forgivable" is so high that I'll most likely be a "panel guy" the rest of my years.

+ 250 ..

Does this mean that you have to add usd 250 to the cost of a panel speaker to get the same quality with a box speaker? ;)

No. It means you take the price of a panel speaker and MULTIPLY by 250 to get a cone speaker that can match it :p

No box No crossover.

About to renew my membership card ;)

Without spending ginormous amounts of money, if I were doing a 2 channel only system, it would be the new Maggies 20.X, Tube Amp(s), great subs [multiple] (there a number of "reasonably priced" options), room correction/crossover management (TacT?), appropriate room treatment and some reasonably priced source hardware.

I've heard most of this in a well done room (used huge Audio Research Mono Amps) and I've never heard anything since then that could compare at any price when playing solo piano music. Remarkable!!!
