Maybe one of the Math of Physics people here can corroborate. I'm seeing a classically defined parabolic curve. In Naval terms there are in sight and over the horizon trajectories. I believe the term was angle guns.

An object in free space moving around a gravitational center follows an elliptical path (orbit). A parabola is open-ended, and works as an approximation (good for flat earthers).
