Corvette ZO6

I just read the link....The Z06 will be even wider than the standard Corvette? Deal breaker big time!
The stock Corvette is too wide and looks it in the flesh. GM really blew it with this car. It looks like a kit car
What they should have done is do a major refresh in looks, even if it is just for the ZO6.
Porsche has nothing to be concerned with.....

The width is functional, and it'll probably have at least 325 width rear wheels, they need to fit somehow.

A vast majority of people have been extremely impressed with the new Vette and it's certainly kicked it's stereotypes right out the door with tons of people wanting to own Vettes that would never have considered them before.

The Z06 is going to be real competition for the Porsche GT2 and GT3, and the ZL1 or Zora will be competitive with the GT2 RS.

With the Z06 starting at $80k, it's also a supercar I can realistically aspire to own one day, and will be without a doubt the best bang-for-the-buck sports car that has ever existed.

IMO, people need to experience the new GM performance cars, they are spectacular. The new Vette and Alpha chassis cars are competitive with anything from the Germans or Italians. I can post race results of my stock Camaro SS beating a field of about 20 BMW M-cars, beating Caymans and Boxsters, Audi RS3s, etc. All with a naturally aspirated motor and a manual trans, no farty turbos and no automatic gear shifting.

I understand the functionality but the design sucks
The car looks like a coke bottle, everything from the C pillar on looks like an afterthought
Fat bottom Vette .....and lets be real, a Supercar it's not. Not even sure it's a sportscar. It has absolutely no elan....It looks exactly like were it comes from...the MidWest designed by a group of 50year old GM stalwarts who wouldn't recognize a great design if it hit them in the face.....the kind of guys who think they are cool ditching the tie for a button down white shirt and a Brooks Brothers blue sport coat....heck they couldn't even get the initial color pallet offerings right. Then there's the thought of having to deal with a Chevy dealer
And would you trust a GM motor at 9k rpm's?

I really wanted to jump in on the ZO6 but it's a new GT3 for me.....

Mid-Rear engine cars kinda all look the same... good performance, but uninteresting.

You are entitled to your opinion, but don't get too upset at the Z06s passing your GT3, lol. :D

BTW, it's quite obvious you would never consider owning a Vette, and your rant about "the kind of guys" at GM is well... not classy is all I'll say.

I'd still rather have a Porsche any day, even if I got passed. Although I'd want a manual...

utterly ridiculous ..............

i suspect it will show the Cayman GT4 it's tail lights for sure !

The same ones that openly declared they will desist in their efforts manufacturing vehicles to become design houses. You may not have noticed Europe's love affair with motorized vehicles drawing to a close. ;)

I haven't noticed that, no... but I have seen lots of promo material for the new Porsche RS3 and the new Ferrari Roma and F8 Tributo. And the new Lamborghini models, there's a new version of the Huracan and Aventador as well as a new SUV. The newest Audi EV is a RS model, which is their highest performing model. The Porsche Taycan EV is also getting a lot of interest. Hmm, seems like the performance car market is actually overrun with choices from European manufacturers. :p

have a listen to the prototype ..................

Nice! 600+ hp naturally aspirated, 9k rpm, sounds like a race car! Some could be ZL1 or Zoras too, I've heard ~800 hp w/turbos.

Those wheels and tires are huge, I'd bet 335 or 345/25/21 rears and 20" fronts. Modern tires are amazing. I'm running 315 all around for autox racing, similar size wheels on older cars require 6" fender extensions, lol... 1.3g peaks no problem. :)

old thread..

I am evaluating what retirement car/toy to get.. up on my list are the Porsche 718 Spyder RS or GT4 RS and the C8 Z06.. a friend is trying to get me into ZR1.
I really like the look of the 718 Spyder and wish it has user friendly top or a hardtop option. Not 100% sure about the looks of the C8 Z06 as I haven’t seen one up close. Haven’t tracked before and it is something I want to get into.

will do test drives in the spring

Join rennlist.org, their forums are useful for narrowing down the make/model you eventually get and join one of the major clubs like the PCA, POC or BMWCCA. I've been part of all three and have done hundreds of miles of track days with them. There's a place for everyone including beginners, it allows you to explore the limit of your car with an instructor and in a safe environment. If I were the occasional track day person but mostly use the car for weekend drives, id lean towards the Porsche. If I were to build a track day only machine that would see a lot of abuse, my choice would be the older C6 Z06.

Depending on your previous driving experience and aptitude, GT4 and even moreso C8Z will be a LOT of car on track, not something you might typically start out with. I'd consider picking up a track-prepped Miata, BRZ, or similar and starting with that. Then you will be able to gauge your level of interest and understand where you want to go with it. As @puroagave said, the choice for a weekend sports car for the road and a track car might be different.

Both C8Z06 and Porsche are great choices for a sports car though. I'm not sure what GT3s are looking like pricewise right now, but I think they are really the pinnacle of P-cars. GT4s are amazing, but GT3s are truly special and a level above the Caymans imo. I can't even wrap my head around what a ZR1 would be like, besides costing a literal fortune to drive on track. 1000 hp is going to vaporize tires and brakes at an incredible rate, and most non-pro level drivers won't be able to do it justice.

My car is setup for SCCA autox and time trials. Will be going for a national top-10 in my class in autox this year. My car is still kinda streetable, I'd love to buy a real race car but it's not in the budget right now. It's an '18 Camaro SS 1LE with MCS 2-way remote suspension an an 18x12 square wheel setup.

Here's another option, which I'd also prefer over any Cayman except the GT4RS... a '15-'16 991.1 Carrera GTS. This was the last naturally aspirated GTS and had a 430 hp 3.8L 6-cyl. The GTS does well on track while being a better road car than a GT3. I've been in both a '16 GTS and a later GTS with turbos. The turbo car is extremely fast and capable but loses something over the earlier NA GTS. I prefer NA for track, you know exactly what you're going to get when you put your foot down. This car will likely appreciate in value as well.

I went from a 1999 Porsche 996 to a 2008 Z06 to my current 2014 Porsche Turbo S.
The TTS is by far the fastest, best built, and fun to drive car I have ever owned.
Zero maintenance problems also!

The cayman gt4rs is a amazing drive machine(cornerspeed) but as daily driver too loud for me.
the intake sits directly on your ear sounds incredible but after 2 laps on the Nurburgring you wish you had earplugs. Drive with helmet is good idea. Skip 7min 05sec, the round begings.
