LG has announced it will release a new 5-inch LCD screen later this year that boasts a 1080p resolution.

Designed for "smart devices," the new panel also features a 440ppi pixel density -- handily beating the 330ppi Retina display found on Apple's iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. "The naked eye is unable to distinguish between individual pixels," LG said in a statement announcing the new screen.

The 5-inch display will have a 16:9 aspect ratio and a 1920x1080 resolution, a combination more associated with HDTVs and high-definition monitors. The display is built on AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) technology, which provides wider viewing angles, improved color palette, and faster touch-response times, LG said.

News of LG's new screen emerges as Apple is reportedly gearing up to outfit the next-generation iPhone with screens that are at least 4 inches wide, a marked increase over the 3.5-inch 960x640-pixel Retina display the iPhone currently sports.

The new LG screen, which will be released in the second half of 2012, will be on display in June at the SID 2012 Display Week trade show in Boston.

This also means Apple can make a "mini me" iPad that has high pixel density.

I might never watch an airline inflight movie again. :D

I think the most important news is that the display won't be made by Samsung - up to now the leader of smartphone displays. This means that the competition is really bringing it up to Samsung - only a good thing! The other good thing is - Samsung has been keeping the best display tech for themselves. With a competitor, the market will really open up.

I am sure Samsung has something too as this is such a competitive high volume business. Apple has clearly made this is a buying criteria and anyone who wants the biggest prize -- being the source for Apple -- would have to play this game.

Importantly making these displays is no big deal. The big deal is the cost. The more pixels, the higher chances for defects. If you take them out, then the cost per unit goes up if there are too many defects.

My contract is up for renewal in September and I'm excited about all the new phones that are coming. I won't likely see a phone with this new displayat that time, but I love the heat of the competition that is bringing some nice stuff to market.
