The Absolute Sound (magazine) take on many aspects of computer assisted music reprodu

Well there's a response that took some time to search. FWIW I ditched my brief 1 year subscription to Absolute Sound this past year. I liked it better in the distant past but not now. I continue to subscribe to Stereophile, largely due to Atkinson.

Do media players have a sound?

Wow, only post #14 of 114 total in a thread (Music Server Project ) started by PNWAS. I need to settle in and read that in detail. One key question is how much have you noticed that SQ (Sound Quality) varies with on-board sound (via coax S/PDIF output) on recent mobos? Since you've been...

Do media players have a sound?

Interesting refs. Anyway, I upgraded my 1.1.1 foobar2000 to 1.1.9 (both free) on both my 2 Win7/64/Pro PCs, and also got the WASAPI DLL at http://www.foobar2000.org/ Sound quality of foobar2000 ver. 1.1.9 w/WASAPI seems equal to that of JRiver Media Center ver.16 w/WASAPI; i.e. my best...

Do media players have a sound?

Sorry that I wasn't more clear. My Asus Xonar STX sound board is presently not installed. I wanted to run it on one of my two Win7/64 Pro PCs but at that time (sometime several months ago) the install disc completely screwed up the PC I tried it on. Twice no less, so the 1st time wasn't...

Do media players have a sound?

Thank you for this thread, and your recent help to me in this thread on player setup. Perhaps a bit OT but related, the threat to CD music disc existence continues to be from low-rez music and not from from high-rez music, either downloads of it via broadband internet nor BD music...

Do media players have a sound?

Within JRMC with "Direct Sound" as driver choice, under "Settings" click on "DSP and output format" then on the DSP Studio window that comes up, when Output Format is clicked (on the left column), there's an interesting set of choices, but it does appear that it process the input stereo 24/96 at...

Do media players have a sound?

I saw Gary's post in this thread where he provided a graphic of foobar2000 Preferences list (post#50) which is why I thought that he's likely using an Intel based PC. Meaning that my AMD based PC shows no WASAPI named driver to choose from within my foobar2000 player driver choices. So I'm...

Do media players have a sound?

To my surprise, I agree that two different players on the same PC sometimes do sound slightly different. For me the players are J River Media Center ver. 16 and Foobar2000 ver. 1.1.1, on a recent Gigabyte/AMD PC. Whereas I suspect that you're using an Intel setup? FWIW I doubt that...

    1,000+ members!

Nothing wrong with that. Meaning that that 5% have at least got brains and seem to me to not be inclined to permit the stupid stuff that happens on AVS. IMO where WBF goes from here depends on the moderators. e.g web newsgroup rec.audio.high-end has it's limits due to the belief(s) of...

    A farewell to CD’s

Got it to work. Some (all?) of these 24/96 flac files sound excellent! Was using foobar2000 1.1.1 but just installed JRiver Media Center v.16 and that may sound even better. I clearly need to figure out if that's really true and if it is then why. FWIW I don't know what JRMC is doing nor...

    A farewell to CD’s

Thank you very much. Nice set of free high rez files with most having 3 choices each: 1) Stereo FLAC 24BIT/192kHz 2) Stereo FLAC 24BIT/96kHz and 3) Surround 5.1 FLAC 24BIT/96kHz Nice music time lengths; nice broadband download speeds (1.9 MB/sec typically). I got all of the all of the...

    A farewell to CD’s

Per your suggestion I rooted around there (signed in, etc.), but didn't get anywhere with the "free" high rez download. So it wasn't free. :( It did get me to amazon, where I got a used cheap CD of Verdi Arias with Hvorostovsky (baritone/Delos Records label). If I like it maybe I'll go back...

    A farewell to CD’s

Thanks. From memory of ~8 months ago, that's a good web site. I'd still appreciate some site addresses, for download of some decent longer playing high rez music samples that are free. Thanks. Does Linn Records offer any? I know the site but am not finding any free samples.

How to get S/PDIF from the MB

Motherboard on board digital sound (via either S/PDIF coax wire (IMO/experience optical S/PDIF (aka Toslink) isn't quite as good) or USB wire, is as good as it gets (or close enough for me) for redbook sound (stereo 16/44.1); even compared to a high quality universal player like my slightly...

    A farewell to CD’s

Interesting thread. 1. What is Vincent's web address? i.e. his computer audio site address? 2. I'd appreciate some site addresses, for download of some decent longer playing high rez music samples that are free. Thanks. Does Linn Records offer any? I know the site but am not finding any...
