I experience the flare as offering better integration of sound emanating from the bass port or mouth.
Without them the layering that I hear in the Maag midsummer is veiled by bass prominence. I have also tried the larger flair which I found to be too much the other way.

The "Webster" was recorded using "Beyerdynamic M90x pro" microphones. Large condenser cardiod pairs.
The others were recorded using "Earthworks" small condenser hyper cardiod pairs.
The mics go straight into a "Canon XC-15" with no pre or post editing or production.
