    Fun with Metallurgy

This seems like a revival of an old thread. I can comment on the corrosion/ plating part but have no idea about the audible differences in various metal plating schemes. The primary reason for plating precious metals on contacts is to prevent oxidation of the contact surface and thereby...

GIK Acoustics N23 5” Quadratic Diffusors

Spirit: Don’t know how much progress you’ve made with your diffusors. I had a similar experience with absorption at the FRP taking too much of the music away. My solution was to use a lean diffusor (Arqen Design) on one of my side walls. I posted the results at gearslutz with a lot of other...

Tweaks : A sensible investment or a waste of money?

I agree that a sense of humor is essential in this hobby.

    Speaker height and width conundrum

The triangle I use to set up my Sonus Faber Monitor speakers has an 80” base and a 102” altitude. Sonus Faber recommends two options: 1) Equal lateral triangle that yields a flat frequency curve or 2) Isosceles triangle with minimum toe-in that gives a bass bump and high frequency roll off. I...

Tweaks : A sensible investment or a waste of money?

Mark Waldrep released his book earlier this year (2018). He contrasts differences between pro audio and audio enthusiast views and talks about what he thinks is important for better sound. He provides lots of explanation - especially in the music format sections. I found it interesting.

Tweaks : A sensible investment or a waste of money?

Waldrep covers a lot of ground. I have not read all 825 pages of his book. As previously posted, one person’s tweak is another’s undisputed no-brainer improvement. Useless Tweaks - After market power cords and conditioners are not needed (p. 725) Cable elevators, CD demagnetizers, shorting...

Tweaks : A sensible investment or a waste of money?

I’ve been reading Mark “Dr. AIX” Waldrep’s book “Music and Audio: A User Guide to Better Sound”. It’s interesting to get a professional’s take on audio tweaks. I have some disagreements with him but not many.

    Tone controls?

Hard to argue with this guy. I've been working on the room acoustics. The lean diffusor from Arqen has improved things.

PRaT: "Pace Rhythm and Timing" or "PRetentious audiophile Trash"?

Ok, Jkeny gave a reasonable explanation of how a better oscillator could improve PRaT on a DAC. Yet, we see this phrase used to describe non source equipment like amplifiers. (Robert S. Youman reviewing the Pass Labs INT-60 in Positive Feedback Issue 79.) How does this make sense?

PRaT: "Pace Rhythm and Timing" or "PRetentious audiophile Trash"?

JKeny: I’ve been reading Toole’s “Sound Reproduction” 3rd edition. The reference you want is top of page 93. He goes on to describe phase shift at low frequencies as a special case which may be of more interest to you. The reason I stopped at 10Hz is that I don’t believe my Marantz CD...

PRaT: "Pace Rhythm and Timing" or "PRetentious audiophile Trash"?

Hi JKeny: I like how thorough your forum replies are. As a developer, you are far more knowledgable than I am. What I find difficult to understand from a system analysis perspective is the assertion that phase noise or jitter accounts for a significant portion of infidelity in playback. The...

PRaT: "Pace Rhythm and Timing" or "PRetentious audiophile Trash"?

I view it as meaningless jargon.
