One of my motivations for giving the 354 a chance was the assumption, and it is nothing more than a guess, was that as it was among the last of the tube electronics in the Ampex timeline the design would have benefited from all of the experiences of the preceding units.

Isn't it correct that any variant of Dolby NR is useless in playback unless the tape was originally recorded with that specific scheme? Or, does it afford some benefit when used with non-Dolby media?

The only non-Ampex machine I own is a Studer A80 VU MKII outfitted with FM 1/4-tk playback head, which earns its keep due to gentle tape handling.

Is it actually a 350 and not a 351? Without seeing the power supplies or the telltale 'dot' it is difficult to distinguish. In either case I would have put the Furman at the bottom of the rack, which is basically where Ampex recommended putting the power supplies for rack-mounted units.
