Those must be the console or mixer meters, so we don't necessarily know what level the A80 is recording at. Still can't get past the 1" tape...you gotta love it :D
Tom
Probably the best choice in the long run. Better PB head (I prefer Flux ME if the budget allows) wired direct for better outboard electronics. Make sure the tape path is up spec, tension arms, reversing roller bearing, etc. Proper spacers for NAB reels, maybe quality NAB hubs for convenience...
Spent the past five month updating an older-design laboratory instrument with rad-hardened devices. Anyone who has ever been set back by the price of a quality audio tube should try shopping for rad-hard op amps.
Apparently Willi Studer had a strong opinion on the MR70:
http://http://www.tonbandmuseum.info/nach-den-ampex-3xx.html
One can only assume (if the story is factual) that Willi was speaking in terms of the entire MR70 recorder. Today we find quite a few transports that do a great job of...
Roger,
At the time I already had at least one FR1100 lying around; this one was a bit different in a few respects. My only regret in getting rid of it (and I really don't recall who ended up with it) was that it didn't look like some home-made thing...it looked like someone worked quite...
A few years back I stumbled upon an Ampex instrumentation recorder which resembled a 300 transport except for the capstan drive. Instead of the rubber-tire drive system, it had a timing belt & pulley arrangement, which when spun by hand definitely felt like something you would not want for the...
There's three versions of the 192-DSD DAC. The preamp version, which contains a pair of single-ended RCA input jacks which follow the volume control, is available with a black face & VU meters, and a Silver-face model that does not have the VU meters (LED's).
The 'Mastering' version has a...
My standard for Red Book playback had been a Krell KPS25s, which remained unchanged until I put together a music server earlier this year. The Krell is no slouch; it is an excellent transport and the internal DAC left nothing out on 44.1 material. Moving my digital playback platform to a...
Dsd NOW!
Spent a few hours last night installing the Mytek 192 DSD-DAC and configuring FooBar, and actually got to the point where I could try it out. With files previously handled by the Benchmark DAC1, the Mytek steps up to the plate and delivers(!) It integrates well with FooBar and...
Bruce,
It could very well that I an interpreting the Mytek instructions wrong, but the 'table of contents' page in the manual indicates that the DoP installation is preferred. Given a Windows platform with FooBar, is that what I want, or do I want the native DSD installation?
Tom
Mytek with Foobar, installation overview....
My current system is a laptop running FooBar ->> M2 Tech USB to PDIF ->> Benchmark DAC. This weekend I'll be replacing the Benchmark with the newly-arrived Mytek 192 DSD. If anyone can clear up a few points I'd appreciate it...
I already have...
Thanks Michal, and everyone, for your responses. Much appreciated. I had not been online for almost a week (long Sandy story.....) and was glad to see Michal had joined the forum.
Also excited to confirm that the Stereo 192 will basically drop in and replace my Benchmark.
Tom
There's nothing like a well-packed reel (!)
I didn't see much on the website in the way of equipment or technical information related to the recording/dubbing process. Is there anything included with the tapes?
Tom
Mytek Volume Control, help...
Can anyone help me get a better insight on how the Mytek volume control functions? My current setup is music server (laptop running FooBar) --->> Benchmark DAC1--->> Preamp (Krell KPS25s). Volume on the server is set to maximum, DAC1 in 'calibrated mode' +4dBu @...
Two generations of Ampex
Finished up the 440B rebuild late last week and dragged it all up to the listening room, along with the previously completed 354. Installing the two machines, running cables and final adjustments was a marathon twenty hour session. I couldn't even see straight after...
440B Rebuild
Hopefully this all adds back up to a 440B:
This is going to be my 'multi-format' machine, with the ability to play various tape configurations just by swapping headblocks and repro cards. The starting point was a B-series transport that had no discernible wear on any of...
Thanks for fixing that, didn't realize I had botched the link.
We saw Diana back in July at the Ocean Grove Great Auditorium and heard some new tracks as well. Show started off late (no power due to storms), then they had to contend with ongoing thunder, followed by fireworks in neighboring...
Interesting notes on the upcoming Diana Krall album Glad Rag Doll:
http://http://jazztimes.com/articles/30498-diana-krall-to-release-new-album-glad-rag-doll-sept-25
Album was recorded direct to analog tape.....a buddy of mine linked the story saying it was available on tape, it is not. :(...
Frequency response, yes. Have not done enough listening with the 300 to make a comparison to the noise floor, but I suspect both will improve after the electronics are aligned and I've hand-picked a few tubes for the electronics. What I did notice on the Studer was less cross-talk on consumer...
Sounds great, I'll have to align it again to get the most out of the ME head. Spooling one of my master dubs with the Std head then replaying with the ME head clearly shows that there is more information on the tape than the standard head can reproduce.
I had a quarter-track ME head...
JRF Masterpiece.......
Just in from John French, the custom head assembly for the 300:
This is a playback-only head unit that feeds into either AG350 (SS) or 350 (Tube) electronics. Head on the left is Flux Magnetics STD, head on right is Flux ME (extended response). Mounting a second...
From experience with my own OTL's and discussions with other owners, I'd have to disagree with that. At least in the case of Atma-Sphere products. If you're running one of the older Futterman designs or something that's 6C33C-based, then you'd best flip the power switch with trembling hands...
Keeping along the lines of the original post, my Atma MA1 MKII.2 amps have been pretty reliable and are certainly easy enough to live with. I check bias/DC offset every few months, and have only lost three output tubes in four years (two went right after initial setup). You could probably lose a...
Electronics for the newly rebuilt 350
After spending the past year rebuilding a 350 transport, I was anxious to put together some electronics for it. There was a 354 unit sitting on the shelf that had lots of potential; cosmetically it was almost perfect but it suffered from a few bad repair...
The 12-yr sherry is high on my list of favorites, but then again so are many of The Macallans. The cask strength has a very enjoyable nose but you really have to add a bit of water to release the flavors, which to a purist defeats the original purpose.
So I say to myself...now why have I...
