Hi DaveyF,
Sorry if I wasn't clear.
What I'm saying is, assuming that German pressing and US pressing were sourced from the same mastering, in my experience, when played in a transport or player, they will not sound indistinguishable from each other and neither will sound indistinguishable...
Hi Tim,
Actually, even if you don't mic everything, balance doesn't happen by itself. The players are part of the key - they must be able to balance against each other. Musicians used to do this all the time, until they got used to having a "soundman" do this for them.
Getting rid of the...
Hi Tim,
Yet two CDs, which *contain* the same data, can *sound* different when played via a transport or player.
One of the theories has to do with timing in the decoding; was it Robert Harley who said "The right data at the wrong time is the wrong data"?
Aside from this, I am confident there...
Hi Tim,
Guesses are about all I have. Most of the plants I've spoken with tell me their discs sound exactly like the masters. All I can conclude is they're either not listening or simply not hearing it.
Interestingly to me, when I was speaking with different plants prior to selecting one...
Hi DaveyF,
With CDs where large sales were expected, such as the Zeps, clones of the CD master were sent to several replication plants. So the likelihood is that the German and US and Japanese pressings used the same mastering. Still, as I've said since my first CD master in 1983...
Hi Tim,
If Bruce calls (and is willing to ignore the loudness wars), I would love the opportunity.
I did have the good fortune of working on one of his albums: I did the editing (while at Atlantic) for "Nebraska".
Best regards,
Barry

Hi Christian,
Lots of great folks over at SH. Some others too, unfortunately. I decided to leave because there were too many who approached it as a battleground instead of as a playground. I'm hoping WBF is the latter.
Best regards,
Barry

Hi Andre,
I've been on sessions that seemed to go on forever - not a good sign musically or "feel"-wise for the record. When I've worked with producers who wanted to listen at levels that would damage one's pancreas, I always worked out an arrangement: I'd work at a level I thought was...
Hi Tim,
The guy who was singing on the electric rock songs *was* playing electric guitar. I didn't want him *too* close to the mics because that would alter the overall sound of his voice. Yet, at the same time, his amp was not that far from him; I'd say only about 3 or 4 feet behind him...
Hi rbbert,
Way too long for my taste.
Besides, it is hard to include the artist's autograph in a download. ;-}
Best regards,
Barry

Hi Andre,
I would agree (and posted as much earlier today) that the monitoring in most studios is somewhere around the level of a mediocre car system - but louder.
As to hearing an album multiple times, this is routine when I master; I hear an album over and over again, sometimes 8 or more...
Hi Tim,
Is there an icon for a big grin? ;-}
There are background vocals too!
I captured the vocals with the same pair, arranged in a stereo array. Balance was achieved by moving people (and instruments) instead of moving faders.
Technically speaking, I took advantage of the inverse...
Hi Steve,
No doubt!
Thanks again for the hospitality and the wonderful welcome.

Hi Joost,
What "moniker" do you use on CA?
Glad you like the cables. I've become a big fan of them.
Thanks for the forum section suggestion. My only concern is time. But we'll see. ;-}
Best regards,
Barry

Hi Tom,
I'm very proud of this new release - real, acoustic jazz, recorded in real stereo, with no messing around.
The players are wonderful; they nailed every take and we did the whole album in two four-hour sessions - including setup, getting the balance, doing the session and breakdown. The...
Hi Amir,
Thank you.
I love hearing about other passionate folks' experiences with music and sound and sharing my own experiences.
Always great to make new friends too.
Best regards,

Hi Frantz,
Thank you. I am hoping to do another album with Markus Schwartz & Lakou Brooklyn. I love working with them and Markus has turned me on to the wonder and beauty of Haitian music.
I just completed mastering of a new album by Markus and the guitarist from Lakou Brooklyn, Monvelyno...
Hi everyone,
Just thought I'd say "Hello" as I'm new 'round here.
My name is Barry Diament. I'm a producer and audio engineer; many know me for my CD mastering work.
Rather than repeat what I just posted, I'm going to link to a post about my work...
Hi Tim,
Rest assured my friend.
I don't do compression and I don't do autotune.
Best regards,
Barry

Hi Tim,
They're not Reference Recordings by Keith Johnson either. ;-}
They're just the best I could do at the time, with the sources and gear I had available to me.
I fully understand that different folks will have different priorities and different favorite masterings.
Best regards,
Barry...
Hi everyone,
As a new member here, I’d like to introduce you to my label, Soundkeeper Recordings.
Several years ago, I hit a burn out point with so many record industry folks evaluating mastering work using loudness meters instead of loudspeakers. So I stopped promoting my mastering services...
