I am familiar with her, although I have not seen this interview.
As a musician (violinist and pianist) she is extremely talented. Tons of potential.
As a composer, I am not impressed.
Regurgitating music styles from over a century ago, does nothing for me. But then, she is only 13...
If it has any hope of reaching the size and professionality of previous THE Shows, it will not be able to remain in the same hotel.
As already pointed out, any good audio show needs large rooms for big systems (like Von Schweikert, MBL, large Wilsons, or large Martin Logans) and will also...
A very disappointing show. I bought tickets for Friday and Sunday. Only used my ticket on Friday, my Sunday ticket went to waste. I covered the entire show in a couple of hours.
I am assuming it is due to the LAAS show being scheduled a week later, then folding altogether.
Only 24 rooms, a...
Good subject.
I used to own a pair of Koss ESP9. I haven't heard them for years, but I would bet they are still as accurate as many top of the line, big $$ current headphones. Problem was, they were as uncomfortable as hell.
I also had a pair of Stax SR-404. Not as ultimately accurate as the...
What an amazingly generous invitation!
I wish I could go, but I will only be attending THE Show on Friday and Sunday. I have a memorial service to attend on Saturday.
Please post pictures.
I was hoping to see a bit more action on this thread.
Seems to me, that classical music is thought by too many people to be a 'museum piece', instead of the progressing art form that it actually is.
One of the problems, as I see it from my experience posting on the Talkclassical.com forums...
I'm debating seeing him this time around.
I am not a huge fan of his latest release. But then, his set list looks pretty strong.
And his band is made up of world class musicians.
My last concert was OHM at the jazz club, The Baked Potato here in LA, a couple of weeks ago.
World...
Has anyone mentioned Thomas Ades yet?
I am new to his music, but so far I've been quite impressed.
Another new discovery for me is Augusta Reed Thomas. Almost everything I've heard so far is very good. The recording of EOS: Goddess of Dawn, is on Reference Recordings, so the quality is...
As a fellow resident of LA, I also am celebrating the respite from the rain.
Here is "Spring" from contemporary composer, Thea Musgrave, from "The Seasons".
I am really enjoying the new Mathias Eick recording on ECM, "Ravensburg".
Love the sound of Mathias' trumpet soaring over the rest of the band. Especially Hakon Aase's violin.
I thought about mentioning Sunny's, but it seems a bit too far outside of LA if someone is only in town for a week, and wants to visit a few shops.
But then, I did include The Source, and they are a bit far from LA also.;)
Here you go!

I recommended Bates on the second page of this thread (post #18) and included a video of Anne Akiko Meyers performing his violin concerto.
Great piece.
I guess there is not much love for modern and contemporary classical on WBF.
Well...
I'll keep contributing to this thread.
Joseph Schwantner - From a Dark Millenium (1980)
There is hardly ever a need to upgrade cables.
Cables do not wear out, or hardly ever break. So, there is no need to upgrade them.
There is an option for one to upgrade cables, if they want.
I believe in cables.
I see them everytime I listen to my system. I have almost absolute...
I would check out either the Sure SRH1540 (closed back) or the Sure SRH1840 (open back).
They both retail for $499.
Before I got my Grado GS2000e ($1400), I owned a pair of SRH1840. For $500, 'they punched quite a bit over their weight class'. For the price range, very detailed and...
I slightly prefer the original Italian version, "È festa", from their first album, "Storia di un minuto".
By the way, I saw PFM's 2017 tour here in Los Angeles, and they were unbelievably good! Only 3 original members, but they kicked butt. Such incredible musicians.
If you have a chance...
In general, I tend to disagree with the thesis in the OP.
Sure, I agree that high price does not always translate to higher fidelity over a mid price speaker, but it does give an advantage of of better materials, production techniques, better components, etc, that, when implemented well, can...
Gentle Giant, PFM, Genesis, Zappa!
Sounds just like my early collection.
Kind of hard to nail down my fist albums, but probably these;
YES - Fragile
PFM - Cook!
Gentle Giant - Three Friends
Or possibly, King Crimson - Lizard, Hatfield and the North - Rotters Club, Magma - Mëkanïk...
Actually, I believe the most recent release on that list is from 1973 (Herbie's "Headhunters"). So, there is more like 44 years to come up with a jazz recording to replace something on that list.
At least half of my top 25 jazz recordings, would contain recordings from the last 30-40...
Here is an interesting violin concerto written by American composer Mason Bates. I believe it was commissioned by violinist, Anne Akiko Meyers.
It is definitely modern sounding, but still quite tonal, and somewhat playful.
Really love the final movement.
I bought this on CD without...
My vinyl collection is small, by the standards in this thread (2000), but all high quality. It is only stuff (with a few exceptions) that I listen to regularly.
I never quite got the "collecting for collecting's sake" gene.
I do have some very rare Italian prog-rock LPs, that are worth a lot...
The same arm/cartridge was used on the tables. The arm is a Stogi S 12 w/VTA and a Lyra cartridge.
Maybe I was being a bit hyperbolic with my statement, but there definitely was a noticeable improvement with Kronos.
My cousin has had just about every vintage table mentioned in this thread, refurbished and mounted in various plinths. He must have gone through 7 tables in the last 2 years, and more before that. Idlers, DD's, belts etc. Several EMT, a Garard, Linn, SP10, and more I can't remember. I've heard...
Tell me about it!
I am in the process of moving as we speak. More boxes of LPs than I want to count. A bit over 1500 LPs.
And to make matters worse, I was unable to find any boxes at any record store or box store around me that are 12" x 12", like used to be available. All I could find were...
Not the best, but the most memorable.
Every Sunday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, there are some wonderful free classical concerts in an excellent venue, that go under the title "Sundays Live". They are a combination of performances by world class soloists, UCLA students, various...
I am a fan of music that has the following attributes, to some degree (not any specific order): complexity (time signatures, chord changes, melodies, etc), variety and depth of emotion, great musicianship, beauty (which is not always obvious), and a few others.
This includes: classical (20th...
