Terje Rypdal - Whenever I Seem to Be Far Away
This 74 release nicely straddled the lines between jazz, prog (King Crimson), and modern (tonal) classical. The haunting french horn used on this makes for a dark, but beautiful listen.
I may have a bit of confirmation bias here (Rypdal is from...
I disagree.
The previous years of T.H.E. Show in Newport/Irvine were all highly attended. And the LAOC Audio show near LAX was also quite crowded. Many packed rooms, busy halls, crowded record and headphone vendors. And I believe, all these shows had around 100 rooms, if not more.
So, despite...
Many people are unable or unwilling to get away for a long weekend, to travel to another state,
In all fairness, after the death of Richard Beers, Bob Levi tried to contact and organize another T.H.E. Show with the remainder of the crew, and they did not get any sort of commitment. So, that's...
Bloody hell!
This is pretty idiotic.
LA, despite being such a large metropolitan area, cannot support 2 shows. Especially both in the same month.
Vendors are going to lose confidence in showing here, and attendees will be the real losers.
Another one of my favorite subgenres is Zeuhl. This subgenre was pretty much the creation of one person, Christian Vander of Magma. He also created his own language.
He was influenced by 20th century classical and John Coltrane.
One of the earliest bands influenced by Magma, were French...
One of my favorite of the subgenres of prog, is RIO, or more accurately known as avant-prog.
Progarchives description, I feel is quite accurate:
"Avant-prog is generally considered to be more extreme and 'difficult' than other forms of progressive rock, though these terms are naturally...
I am quite familiar with Progarchives and their descriptions. I did not read any of the original posts yet, or I would have recognized the descriptions.
Thank you!
I've never seen this thread before!
I will have to read the intro posts by Ron Party this weekend.
I have been listening to, and collecting prog since 1973 or thereabouts.
I am a fan of most sub-genres, and all eras.
My main interests are: Zeuhl, avant-prog (RIO), symph, fusion...
The slow death of CES isn't a sign that there is a problem with high end, it is a sign that there is a problem with CES.
Axpona, RMAF, T.H.E. Show in Newport, High End Munich have no problems finding plenty of vendors and attendees.
Most product introductions these days, occur at RMAF, Axpona...
Room treatment is NOT a tweak!
It is as important, if not more so, than any other piece of equipment. It is much more important to the sound of the overall system than cables, for example.
Yep!
It seems like a good choice. I was there once several years ago.
Great thing about that location, I'll be able to take the Metro! Won't have to deal with traffic or parking.
So...
It looks like, after last years debacle of the LA Audio Show and the very disappointing T.H.E. Show (less than 30 rooms, only a couple of LP/CD vendors), there will be another attempt at T.H.E. Show this year.
T.H.E. Show 2019
I wish the people organizing T.H.E. Show this year, all the...
So, I'm trying to figure out the deal with the OP for this thread.
He joined on 12/20, and so far, has posted 4 times on different threads. And all 4 posts are links to this "Christmas on the Moon" video by Nico Cartosio. And he has yet to reply to any comment on his threads.
Seems like a...
Since the vast majority of my classical music listening is from, say, post WWII to the contemporary era, I am constantly discovering new composers.
Erkki-Sven Tüür from Estonia is a recent discovery for me. I am loving his Violin concerto, "Zeitraum for orchestra", "Aditus (for orchestra)"...
I will also explain my musical progression, which has a couple of similarities, and differences to Bonzo75.
I quickly grew tired of pop music when I was pretty young, and soon discovered Deep Purple, Zep, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Ten Years After, and other 'heavy' rock bands of the 70's. As...
Another candidate for best of 2018, is the new release by trumpet player, Jonathan Finlayson, "3 Times Round".
This is a beast!
The playing by all members is really jaw dropping. The compositions are creative and complex.
Sample here - 3 Times Round
I wish I could have gone to this event, but I was out of town.
I used to live quite close to Audio Element, but now I am a distance further west.
Great shop and staff. I might have to head over there soon for a visit.
I don't think so.
There are quite a few parameters that are obtainable at reference level, that can be achieved without being in a dedicated (treated room). Although, some reasonable level of care needs to go into the room.
Reference level can not be obtained in a square room, or a room with...
I am not sure I agree.
I have 1000's of prog albums on vinyl, and most of it, overall, is better in this respect than mainstream rock recordings of the same era. I do not notice what you are hearing as a major problem.
PFM, Banco, Magma, National Health, Happy the Man, Camel, Henry Cow...
I put imaging and soundstage very close to tone, timbre, dynamics, etc, in importance to me. While I wouldn't want to give up any of these latter attributes for imaging and soundstage, I don't think I'd want a system that does not have a decent amount of imaging.
For me, it is almost the...
Looks like my tastes are quite a bit different than most here, so I will be posting some pretty obscure stuff,
I'll start with a relatively well known band, the beautiful "Water Wheel" by Oregon.
I do not see being an 'all about the music' audiophile, and audiophiles that are into the equipment, as being mutually exclusive.
The vast majority of my listening is music first. And that is always my motivation for improving my system.
But that does not mean that, I can not also enjoy the...
I think one of the problems is, is that there are a number of chalatons in high end audio (as with any business), so those outside of high end will tend to focus on those, and paint the entire industry with the same broad brush.
I post regularly on the talkclassical.com music forums, and...
Bold mine.
Cables, of any type, do not transmit 0's and 1's. In the case if USB cables, they transmit pulses of light. In digital audio, there are never 0's and 1's being transmitted.
These pulses, have to arrive intact, with the same timing, rise time, intensity and the same duration as...
That's cool!
I am familiar with Spe (their CDs are on my list of future purchases), but I did not put it together that Tuur was a member.
I will have to move their CDs up on my purchase list.
Another recent discovery, is Estonian composer, Erkki-Sven Tüür.
I purchased a CD on the ECM label with 3 pieces: concerto for violin and orchestra, Exodus, and Aditus for orchestra.
I haven't completely warmed to the violin concerto, but the other 2 pieces are excellent.
I heard a similar study about 15 years ago. Although they stated 35 was the age. And it wasn't just music, but visual art, movies and food tastes also tended to become stagnant at 35 (or 30).
This does not describe me, though. I can't relate.
If anything can be said to be 'paralyzed' with...
