Ah, good you mention that you intend to use HQ Player or jRiver. Are you planning to upsample PCM to DSD256 (=4xDSD)? Or will you play material that is already in DSD256 form?
For the first you need significant horsepower (=PC). For the second I would really try a tiny Odroid / Volumio box...
Not an off the shelf solution, but interesting with very little costs of regret:
I have been using several Odroid C2 with Volumio2 for the past two years. Simple to set up and use, excellent sound quality.
The conversion software probably does not work exactly like the Pacific Microsonics HDCD Chip based solution, but for me and for all practical purposes it will do and save me a lot of hassle.
If you do want the real thing, a used Berkeley Alpha DAC is probably the best way to go...

To be independent of the playback equipment, I have HDCD decoded the rips of my HDCDs with foobar:
