Lawyers are never about “can you afford one.” The question is “Can you afford to not have one.” The legal system is whimsical.
I still think “Sit tight” is the best advice for kibitzers, and so that’s what I’m going to do. This is a lot like the “floating opera”. We are only getting occasional glimpses, and always from a distance.

As a lawyer I don' think the legal system is "whimsical." It is adversarial and can be complex and intricate. Bankruptcy is a special division of the law. Did you know most law school exams have no questions? You have to come up with the question and t answer. When you proceed pro se it is inevitable you will miss something.

My daughter is currently doing her under-grad in Law & Criminology, she's got a few more years to burn... after which she'll be upto spec.

According to her, everyone gets caught one way or the other and they all have to pay! There's no easy way out.

I hope you’re right. As @Gregadd points out, this is a specialized branch of law and you want a guide who has mastered the territory. I’ve had good lawyers save me hundreds of thousands… because the law is not logical. The law is driven by precedents, politics, and personalities.

If I’m having knee surgery, I want the 45 to 55 year old who does several hundred a year, not the local guy who has done 50 of them over the last five years.

Same with the ARC situation. You want to navigate this swamp with a guy who can walk through blindfolded because he is in it all the time. A lawyer who is doing OJT is not a good choice.

I didn't know you were a lawyer. I was involved in a lot of high profile BK cases as an IP lawyer. When I'd talk with the BK lawyers, they'd say "the substantive rights are controlled by relevant law" which in my case was typically copyright (and occasionally TM) law. I'd give 'em what they needed and then ask what happens next- and it always sounded a little like the Wild West. I mean, I was used to federal court, knew the rules, knew the substance, but when the BK guys took the ball, it became mysterious to me.

I still own one house subject to an HOA. Last month I had to prepare a detailed submission to get permission to change the fence from weathered wood to white PVC, It took two meetings, and two trips to the municipal codes departments to get it approved. In the house we live in 3/4 mile away, we’re in the county with no HOA and no municipal codes department. I could call a fence company right now and, if they were free, they could start the project today. As long as they stayed on my lot and didn’t dig up utilities, I could be done this week.

I like the protection that an HOA gives densely packed homeowners from the whims and wants of their neighbors. But, of course, I don’t like their interference in my own sensible projects.

I’ve never been suckered into a time share, though attempts were made back in the late 70’s and early 80’s. But my heart goes out to those who believed the sales pitches.
