katylied, I enjoy Air's Moon Safari quite a lot. Interesting side note, Moon Safari is the name of one of my favorite progressive rock bands.

Listening to this right now:

Portishead 'Dummy'

View attachment 11834

If you like Dummy, definitely checkout the 'Live at Roseland' album if you haven't. Much of Dummy on it, and the longer, live versions have an extra tension to them IMO> Was an amazing show to be at. Audience very much all in on trip hop as you might imagine.

Surprised that no one else here has cited Massive Attack -- they're often credited as one of the originators of the genre. Tricky's Maxinquaye is another cool trip hop album.

I recall on the cover of the Zero7 album, some critic had IDd the main single as the 'baby-making song of the year' :)

Bob, you must be looking over my shoulder. Yesterday and this morning I had a massive attack of Massive Attack. :) I listened to Blue Lines, 100th Window, Mezzanine and Protection. First album I put on today was Heligoland.

I do have the Live At Roseland album. I've not seen Portishead live. Can you describe the band's on-stage presence?

I will check out Tricky's Maxinquaye.

What would be underground subterranean abstract blues music? ... The Rebirth of the Cool | Phive ... Trip Hop ...

=> Jhelisa - Coldcut - Massive Attack - Leena Conquest - Ben Harper - Tricky - Freakpower - Portishead - Bomb the Bass - UFO - D*Note
- Method Man - Paul Weller - Beastie Boys ...

...

...

...

I did. :b

The show was trippy (for lack of a better word) and ethereal, with cool lighting efx -- yet intimate at the same time. The Roseland was a good venue for them, not too big. Beth Gibbons has more of an inward than outward personality which may play differently in a big venue. They try to take you someplace, it feels exploratory -- it was a great show.

There are samples of Portishead's 'Glory Box' from Dummy on Maxinquaye btw. Your comments make me want drop my work for the rest of the day and go put on Massive Attack. I'm jealous! Enjoy! May have already mentioned it here, but I found the 24/96 remaster of Blue Lines to be a worthwhile upgrade over the old CD.

So no one has defined Trip Hop

I must be getting old Ron. I have never heard of it

Hip hop beat structures and slow tempo with psychedelic/acid rock and jazz elements. It was most popular in the early to mid 90s mostly in the UK and western EU. Great for sipping tequila ey Ron? :D

Definite 2 thumbs up on Tricky's Maxinquaye.

Hey Jack, I don't need too much of a reason (excuse?) to drink Tequilla. Really, just waking up and greeting the day is good enough for this agave-head.:)

Drop whatever you're doing right now and get a bottle(s) of Fortaleza. I prefer blanco and reposado. Avail in you area. And Arette if you can find it.

Glad you like Tricky's album -- he worked on some Massive Attack albums btw.

When on your Trip Hop cool down laps, check out the solo efforts of Ben Watt (formerly of Everything But The Girl). I would also check out Skye (Edwards).

Just got the new Tricky album and am listening to it now:

Tricky-False-idols.jpg

I'm very much liking what I'm hearing.

Bob, I've tried Fortaleza anejo and didn't care for it but I see the Blanco is highly regarded at tequila.net, so I will give it a try. I'm always game for new tequila.:)

Will check out that Tricky album.

I'm a reposado/blanco guy so don't know the anejo. I think of Fortaleza as tequila rustica -- it's actually made in the old Sauza distillery that was turned into a museum in the 80s when the brand got too big. Grandsons of the patriarch of the Sauza family (this is why it's called Dos Abuelos in Mexico) turned it back into distillery some years ago and make tequila the d way -- baking in clay ovens, beating the pulp out with stone paddles vs a mechanical press, etc

If you like tequila a lite smoother, seek out Arette. Self-described as Tequila Suave, it's unusually smooth but with a lot more character than, say, Patron.

What are some of your favorites?

I'm an anejo person, so all of my favorites are of that ilk. Favorites include, but are in no way limited to, Ocho, Peligroso, Partida, Gran Jubileo (which is impossible to come by), and El Tesoro, just off the top of my agave-head. Ocho extra anejo! Whoa! That is like what R2R is to recorded music... smooth, creamy, buttery, and oh so delicious.

Hey, have you checked out Yello?

Interesting music and definitely audiophile porn.

for a cool trip hop compilation, check out Xen Cuts as well as Thievery Corporation.

on the more downtempo stuff (Zero 7, Air) would include Kruder & Dorfmeister, Tosca, Dzihan & Kamien, etc.

one of my favorite genres...Boards of Canada is probably my latest downtempo masterpiece. Exceptional sound.
