They're a pop band to me, and as said earlier, nothing wrong with that. Maybe 'Anthemic Pop', but I mostly know their hits.

They don't fit my personal definitions of progressive or especially alternative rock, but mine might not be textbook.

I would see Tears for Fears as a Pop group who sometimes use Progressive Rock effects and musical vocabulary ... Nothing wrong with that as someone said

It was nuked along with virtually all of the other threads in the music forum when Steve and Amir were reconfiguring the site a few weeks ago.
