Kal,
What is the Callas opera performance you like best?

On the Price / RCA performance Tito Gobbi has few peers and is outstanding as Scarpia the best in my opinion.

I must admit there has never been a better Vissi d' Arte than Callas / Di Stephano/Gobbi /Sabata

Overall for sound & the power of Karajan's conducting this is my favorite. Too bad the RCA is not on cd.

The Decca label issue is clearly inferior in sound.

That's the one and De Sabata makes all the difference.

Roger,

Stupid question, but is that picture a Marc Chagal painting?

Apologies for the distraction!

Mike

Mike,

I don't know, but it sure looks like a Chagal. Btw Chagal is one of my favorites.

Two more Metropolitan Opera "Live in HD" this season:

Manon: http://www.fathomevents.com/performingarts/event/manon.aspx?d=4/7/2012

La Traviata: http://www.fathomevents.com/performingarts/event/latraviata.aspx?d=4/14/2012

The Met borrowed the Salzburg production -- available on Blu-ray: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001MRMRS8/ with Netrebko. As I might have said before, I rented the disc from Netflix and ordered my own copy the day after I watched it.

BTW, I finally bought the Valencia Wagner Ring cycle conducted by Zubin Mehta that I believe Kal mentioned near the start of this thread. After enjoying 15 hours of Wagner, perhaps it's time for another viewing of the Salzburg Traviata...
