I am getting into big band jazz listening. I will greatly appreciate any recommendation on records of this type of music.

Thank you.

Hi Tang,

Can I confirm you are into Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman?

Best.

Soaring by Don Ellis. Not swing in the purest sense, but a stunning big-band album

as far as a total system workout nothing quite asks as much from a system as big band with all those horns at full tilt. if you don't have the urge to get up and dance with this, it will never happen.:p

and you got to play it loud....

here is a 10 year old thread about the ultimate big band. you likely have it already......and it is an audiophile war horse.....but it's the real deal great big band....'Malletoba Spank' is still the gold standard for system diag. off "Jazz Party In Stereo"

another great big band really well recorded and pressed is Harry James on Sheffield;

then there is Ella and the Duke....

"88 Basie Street" is a great place to start the 'Count' with.

it's out there on tape too......

I was in VA a few weeks ago. I stopped at a thrift store. Some guy either died or gave up music because there had to be 200 plus big band albums there. All with his name and phone number stamped on the cover. I thought of getting a couple but did not as I was flying.

So much more than Swing ... sheer artistry and musicianship ... Duke Ellington, The Great Paris Concert.

Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Orchestra

Woody Herman

Christian McBride Big Band "For Wes, Jimmy and Oliver" recent Mack Avenue release with good sonics

More adventurous:

Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band

Maria Schnieder Orchestra

Jihye Lee Orchestra

Phil Kelly & the SW Santa Ana Winds

Ulysses Owens Big Band

Darcy James Argue Secret Society

I would recommend to liaise with the General for albums, Tang. Here below you’ll find some more mainstream ones that you might like:

Thank you guys. I appreciate all the recommendations. The best thing for me stepping into someone's music room is their record collection..the items I never listened before.
