I have heard both but not on same day. Overall, my impressions are:
- tweeter: Mpro and Q7mk2 are at the same level. Both better than Q7mk1, not by a small margin
- medium: slight advantage for the Q7mk2 (see reason below, different construction of cabinet and different XO may also play a role?)
- bass: I much prefer the Q7mk2. Bass has less overhang. It stops faster, with the additional benefit you avoid smearing the low medium. But some people may prefer the Mproject (in particular people coming from ported speakers). The Mproject feels like having more bass, the Q7 feels like having tighter crisper bass. Q7mk2 bass is the same as on Mk1: it is for me the perfect bass when accompanied by a Qsub18.

I will confirm that my M-Projects have a lot less overhang than my S5's (and I'm sure that's no surprise even though the bass on the S5's was much better than any ported speaker I've heard) but what IS surprising is that the M's are leaner than the S5's. I was worried about them overwhelming my room but it's the opposite. Now I am thinking about adding a QSub15...

I use the Qsub15 with my Q3s for now and have the Ms on order. I will give you feedback when I have both in my living room. But after initial adjustment with REW and using UMIC-1 USB microphone, the Q3s sound MUCH larger. The dynamic range and the ambient has greatly improved. I think the M-Project will benefit with the Qsub in tandem. I would like to know how 1 x Qsub18 would sound compared to 1 or 2 x Qsub15 with the M, hopefully M owners will share their experience as soon as they get their speakers and sub(s)
:)

Can someone point me to any documentation that has details on the Qsub? Can it be connected like a REL (feed from main amplifiers) or does it need a separate XLR from the preamp? Would also like to know if there's any DSP or EQ in the sub.

I love Magico but their website has nothing but images which can be incredibly frustrating at times. :)

Only XLR on the sub, no speaker or phono for the signal.

The EQ has has 12 PEQ (Programable EQ?). You have to use a microphone to measure your room + speakers. REW is free and easy to use, you also need a mic and a Mac/PC. After doing the frequence sweep, you have to manually adjust the PEQ, LPF (low pass filter), gain and delay.

On my pre - Krell Evo 202, I have dual output. I use Cast to my MRAs and XLR to the Qsub.

The Qsub 18 on demo with the Q7 at CES was connected to the Soulution 701 mono XLR Out...

they don't sound as good as the Mundorf. Magico tried Duelund caps...

I knew you would say that :D

My Ultimate have been ready to ship Since December. My custom designed electronics are late. Keep in mind I decided not to go for the standard set up, as I am using an active system with a custom made server / 6 ways digital crossover + 6 Pacific Microsonics Model 2 synched with a custom made clock. We are still playing with different filters on the crossover and with different amps solution (some of them custom, not so easy to find a really silent amp when you have 120dB speaker sensitivity). Designing from scratch a server, a clock, a XO, amps... takes time.
I don't want to ship the speakers to Taiwan before I have tested the full system on the West Coast - it is much easier as the whole design is made there. I am not in a hurry.

Me neither I have patience , but dont wait to long you might cross the Mk 4 while shipping:D

I heard both q7mk2 and Mproject. I talked with Alon about the design of the Q7mk2. He confirmed it is the same driver, with same membrane, but with different efficiency.

Thanks for the info. I'm sure that will make the "M" owners happy.

changes are sometimes hard to get a complete read on in the short term.

many times a more accurate and more extended bass presentation will seem leaner. less ambitious speaker designs tend to trade fullness for accuracy in the name of perception of bottom octave coverage. ideally the 'M' would add authority and weight where the S5's had that 'fullness'. over time you likely will come to fully prefer the 'M's character and not feel you are missing anything.

note I've not heard the 'M' so i'm only guessing here.

an added sub should not ideally change the character of what you now hear, only extend it lower and add maybe weight to the lowest registers. it's the mid-bass where the fullness of the S5 lived, a sub will not/should not affect that.

That pair was for sale for a very long time. Did he ever sell them?

I called and asked jtinn what happened. he told me he could not sell the 'trade-in' Q7's and was forced to finally trade them for Wilson XLF demos with a Wilson dealer leaving Wilson for Magico. then he ended up selling the demo XLF's to another Wilson dealer for quite a bit less than the $95k.:(

Wow. Someone got a nice deal on XLF's then. Tough economy I guess.

Was fortunate enough to hear the new Q7 mark II at Magico headquarters this week. As a Q-5 owner, and having heard the Q-7 many times in the past, i was totally not expecting what i heard. It was so above and beyond what i've heard from any speaker that i was just floored. I didn't believe a tweeter and new midrange/crossover could make such a difference, but it was transformative. Unlike any Magico or anything else I've ever heard. #BlownAway

Fascinating...thanks for the feedback. Were you able to compare the original to the new Q7s by any chance? Have you heard music in this system before? Just trying to gauge if you think it was the new Q7s or perhaps the room as well? Most interested!

Never got an exact a/b, but i've heard the Q7 in this room before a few months prior. And i've heard the Q7 many times on my friend's system with Constellation. I also heard this room a couple of months ago with the M project. And in that i have a soulution 711 at home with the Q-5, i can assure you, sometimes magic happens. Something happened with this Q7 mark II that might just be pure luck. But it was VASTLY better than anything i've heard. An no, i was not on any drug induced materials. Just some good espresso.

That's what i wanted to know...sounds like you've heard that room before, heard the Q7s before, heard the M in that room before...so a good feel, and you were beguiled. Fantastic...now, the ultimate question...are you getting a pair? ;) Thanks for the feedback...very interesting.

i'd get a pair if the size of my room allowed. i've either got an M project or whatever these guys cook up down the road that has the same tweeter/midrange as the Q7 in a smaller package. my dream scenario would be a q-5 mark II. perfect size for my room.
